Belichick Fined; Pats Lose Pick
ESPN ^ | 09/13/07

Posted on 09/13/2007 5:45:28 PM PDT by misterrob

Bill Belichick was hit with a $500,000 fine Thursday night -- the maximum allowable by NFL by-laws -- for violating the league's policy on videotaping the Jets defensive signs Sunday. In addition, Roger Goodell notified the Patriots that they would forfeit a 2008 first-round draft choice if they reach the playoffs, or second- and third-round picks if they do not qualify for the playoffs. The club was also fined $250,000.

Parcells, Boomer Esaison, Salisbury, Ronde and Tiki Barber say that everyone is trying to get signals.

I don't care BB love the us against the world stuff and you can bet the woofing by other players is not going unnoticed in the Pats locker room. The Pats will kick a lot of butt on the way to winning the next SB.

The media wanted to ‘lynch’ BB. They hate him bercause he ignores them and they can’t stand it.

I like BB because he hates the media. One media member tried to get a response from BB yesterday with a picture of Nixon.

Well, if Belicheat has no problem having sex with another man’s wife, it’s not a stretch to see him having no problem with ignoring NFL regulations even after being warned not to do it. I honestly think he’ll wait a while and then start doing it again.

Before word of this broke out, I had the utmost respect for Belicheat, the Patriots organization, and the product they put out on the field, despite the snow plow incident. I found it hard to be mad at the team, just because the 53 players are/were a group of high-character people who played really good football. And I still respect most of the players on that roster, but Belicheat has just ruined their dynasty. “Team of the decade?” Not anymore. At least, not without an asterisk. I may start referring to the Patriots with said grammatical mark from now on, depending up on how Belicheat and Bob Kraft react to this.

And, hey, if you want to help make up for Goodell’s not docking the Pats both first rounders, go ahead and trade me Edgerrin James in our fantasy league. :)

Tom Brady was drafted by the New England Patriots in the sixth round (199th overall) of the 2000 NFL Draft. Now we know why he is considered a “great qb”.

Teams are that stupid that they always use the same signals? They deserve to lose.

I remember when Jimmy Johnson was the coach of the dolphins and I think they were playing the pats (but this was not Belichick's team). He had released Byers (I think it was Byers at least), who went to the pats and told them all the plays, the play names, the audibles, etc.

Gary Stevens, off coordinator of the dolphins, did not, and would not change the audibles for the game against the pats, nor any part of the terminology or anything, not even when players were screaming at him to at least change the colors red to blue, or something, and do anything, since the Pat players (now during the game) were mimicking hand signs, screaming out play names and calling out what the audibles were, and even aligning themselves before the ball snapped in spots where passes were supposed to go, or where the HB was supposed to run to, etc.

So yes, teams are that stupid, that even a coach with 2 superbowl rings and a college championship, can be very arrogant.

"...designed to encourage fair play and promote honest competition on the playing field,"

Ummm. I have to ask: does this mean that the Steeler's Super Bowl "win" will be reviewed and the officials fined?

I have no dog in the hunt, despising the Patriots, the Steelers, and the Seahawks. But a dispassionate analysis of that game can conclude nothing else but that the Steelers were given that game. Why the sudden emphasis on honest[y]?

Methinks this is blowing smoke up a wild hog's butt.

The Fins purchased audio tapes of Brady's audibles then beat the Pats 21-0 no outrage or complaints from the pats.

Are you kidding me? The Patriots are the ones who cried about it in the first place. And in light of this story, it's hypocritical as hell. Furthermore, it was an admission of stupidity on the Patriots' part--what in the hell were they doing NOT changing the audibles every week, like the other 31 NFL teams? Getting audio of Brady's audibles shouldn't have meant a damn thing, because they should be different each week.

I'm starting to hate Boston even more than I hate New York.

Sure? I think it was the Raiders vs the Pats.

Yep! In fact, I think the final score was 3-0.

I'm a fan, and I try to figure out the hand signals (its also why I suspect 2 other teams of doing something similiar).

That said, getting a video pro to go down on the field, and tape, for analysis purposes is so over the top, and blatant that is more then wrong.

The rules do not bar you from stealing signs, they do bar you from lugging video equipment up near the bench and taping the coaches and players with the intent to steal their signs.

You can do it from the stands, but its nowhere near as effective.

LOL..get yer digs in, its appropriate at this time.
Just can’t wait until the Pats/Fins play...we will see what happens then.
I just can’t believe that BB would b so bold and STUPID to do this knowing that the league and especially Boy- gini would be on full alert, stupid, stupid, stupid!
They deserve to be fined and punished for being so careless and foolish.

He weighed the fine to the coach and the loss of the pick as ample enough punishment and as a deterrent to future actions.

This is going to hurt the Pats down the line. They were counting on having 2 number ones next year and that could have been used to replace Samuel and draft a good WR.

Yeah, but it was the other team that got shafted. That should have been corrected.

Awesome.

I have the pleasure of knowing the gentleman who created their latest logo; he resides in my town of Jacksonville, NC. His name is Walt Pingree.

I will give him a printed copy of the “new” rendition, tomorrow.

Funny, every time I turn on ESPN, they’re kissing Belicheat’s ass.

Sean Salisbury and Mike Golic went so far as to say that this controversy is over nothing, and Belicheat should get off with a small fine if he’s punished at all.

Hate that damn network.

Exactly. Recording equipment, with the modern video analysis gear all teams have, means you can put an image of the coach’s signals on the left and a film of the game on the right, and see exactly what signals go with each play. It’s more like getting a crib to Enigma that just stealing signals, because teams don’t change their signals that often. A whole library of these tapes and a team can seem to read the other coach’s minds. You have to write fast with binox.

"...but they took out their Qb..."

They took him out? Belichick must have read the signals and called the "Break the quarterback's Leg" defensive set...sheesh.

It's pretty much a foregone conclusion that the Patriots are making the playoffs, so this means they're docked one first-round pick. Big deal; they'll still have four more first-day picks, including a first-round pick.

The Patriots are in no way harmed in either the short or long term by what Goodell did. The fine is nothing to either Belichick or the Patriots, and the loss of a single first-round pick is offset by the others they have on the first day, in addition to the usual compensatory picks that Scott Pioli is adept at stockpiling.

They'll regain that second first-round pick by trading up, no damage done.

Even in defeat, Belicheat wins.

I think they should have been forced to forfeit a couple games, or penalized the wins. Draft picks are always iffy.

I think if the Redskins never had a 1st round pick they would be better off.
