Bill Belichick was hit with a $500,000 fine Thursday night -- the maximum allowable by NFL by-laws -- for violating the league's policy on videotaping the Jets defensive signs Sunday. In addition, Roger Goodell notified the Patriots that they would forfeit a 2008 first-round draft choice if they reach the playoffs, or second- and third-round picks if they do not qualify for the playoffs. The club was also fined $250,000.

I thought a 4 game suspension was also in line. The way he has been handing out suspensions for players, I figured that was a lock.
Lots of cheating goes on in the game with the substances, stealing signs, holding, etc. This was rather brazen though and as a Pats fan I am disgusted with the violation of the rules.

This is tough, but Goodell had no choice.
Where is the game forfeit? The should have forfeited the game (Jets) in which they cheated.
He weighed the fine to the coach and the loss of the pick as ample enough punishment and as a deterrent to future actions.
This is going to hurt the Pats down the line. They were counting on having 2 number ones next year and that could have been used to replace Samuel and draft a good WR.
That would have caused the Patriots to barely make the playoffs and have to work very hard to earn their 4th Super Bowl in like 7 years.
That wasn’t going to happen for a host of reasons and the sign stealing didn’t have that much of an impact on the game. They didn’t get the tape as it was lost before half time and the Pats really kicked the Jets ass in the second half anyway.
You can’t say cheating had anything to do with Moss blowing by 3 defenders for a TD.
This is total BS. Remember when Bernie Brewer was stealing signs from the top of the beer stein? Crossing one white sock over the other for fastball, curve, location? Big deal... part of the game... Anyway, it’s still baseball season.
Put an asterick next to all their SuperBowl wins. They are illegitimate just like Barry Bonds’ home run title. Sorry Pats.... no dynasty for you.

Goodall did the right thing though. No one will dare do this again and that’s the point of the punishment.

Agree ... in addition to everything else handed down that would have been a crushing blow.
You cheat you lose ... big time.
People forget that Goodell’s first job is to make sure the NFL owners make as much money as they possibly can.
