Dubai tower now world's tallest free-standing structure

The world's tallest building, still under construction in the booming Gulf emirate of Dubai, has become the world's tallest free-standing structure, its developers said on Thursday. The Burj Dubai tower is now 555 metres (1,831.5 feet) tall and has surpassed the 553-metre- (1,824.9-feet) CN Tower in Toronto, Canada, which held the record for the world's tallest free-standing structure since 1976, developers Emaar Properties said in a statement.

The skyscraper, being built by South Korea's Samsung and set for completion at the end of next year, is one of several mega projects taking shape in Dubai, which is part of the United Arab Emirates.

The statement did not reveal the tower's final projected height or its final number of storeys, which Emaar has kept secret since launching the project in January 2004.

The developer announced in July that Burj Dubai, Arabic for Dubai Tower, had exceeded Taiwan's Taipei 101 which is 508 metres (1,676.4 feet) tall, to become the tallest building in the world.

Hmmm...could this have been another reason they murdered the people at the WTC?

This won’t last for long. The jihadis will find fault with it.

They prefer fresh rubble...

Dubai is about the least fanatic Muslim country out there, relatively benign for the most part. It probably helps that they're rich, but not from oil. Trade and tourism bring in most of the money, and those would be threatened if Dubai joined the jihad.

Why not? Everything they do is motivated by hatred formed from jealousy. I’m just saying they may have considered it when choosing a target.

But then again, nothing they do makes any sense to me. Like kamikazes.

And the WTC had even more occupable space than Taipei 101. For some reason they only care about height.

The problem is where you get the ‘they’ from.. Dubai is not the ‘they’ that did anything to us. I’m sure, if Osama and his ilk didn’t have us as ‘the devil’, they would just as quickly bomb all of these structures as, one thing they hate as much as us are ‘moderate’ Muslims. Especially when considering that Dubai World owns stakes in casinos and breweries.

Oman is much teh same way. They keep very quiet about it, but they provide a lot of support to America and they have let use several of their bases for operations since right after 9/11.

Just returned from Dubai. While governed by Sheikhs, it’s actually pretty pro-Western. I was pleasantly surprised by the place. It’s probably the most unreal boomtown anywhere in the world right now. The number of magnificent skyscrapers under construction is like nothing I’ve ever seen. There is nothing in the United States that could even compare with the amount of skyscrapers going up there.

Wow. That graphic really puts it in perspective. It’s not “just a little” taller. It’s a LOT taller.

Not a bad looking building, either. Very graceful.

I’ve got no love lost with islam or greater Arabia, but it is becoming clear that of all the area, Dubai has a number of things figured out. They really seem to be squared away.

Dollars to donuts there’s money going out of Dubai to entities in other Arab states that is used to fund terrorism.

Did you notice the many foreign workers? Not one of them is an illegal alien. But they are doing the work that Abu Dhabians are unwilling to do.

Chpmass, you’re hitting on all cylinders and that’s what I was trying [unsuccessfully] to get at.

MN, we know the breweries are shunned by Muslims, making your point that Dubai is somehow “exempt” from the rules...?

Don't waste your breath.

These people have dug in their heels. It's the same crowd that breathed fire and brimstone over the Dubai ports thing.

In their mind all Muslims should be nuked off the face of the earth.
