Yes, Giuliani - the national front-runner for months now - holds close to a five-point lead over former Sen. Fred Thompson in the latest Real Clear Politics averages.
But there are big warning signs that make a Giuliani nomination a dubious proposition at best. Look - I'm no disinterested observer. I am an active Democrat and was a polling strategist for President Bill Clinton. But a big part of me would like to see the former mayor win the nomination; I'm a New Yorker, and of all the Republicans, he is most to my liking philosophically.

Rudy is trying to be democrat Lite. For the life of me I can’t understand how that resonates in RED states.

Notice I haven't yet touched on Giuliani's most-often-cited vulnerabilities: His support for a woman's right to choose and gay rights still makes him a very heavy lift in the family-values party. Not exactly the words I would choose, but this is the nitty gritty.
On a side note, it's interesting how he inflates Mitt and tries to downplay Fred. Frankly, Mitt bought the Iowa caucuses, and he is running fairly well in New Hampshire because NH is filled with folks who don't want to pay Massachusetts taxes but still retain Massachusetts values--i.e., liberals, the folks who just love to tax somebody else to pay for their agenda. But what I notice is that this confessedly liberal writer's real purpose in this column is to promote Mitt Romney at the expense of Fred, since he recognizes that Rudy is a loser in a party with "family values."

I can’t wait to see how the Rooty Rooters will try to spin this.
No doubt they will talk about how Rooty Toot can get “cross over” voters, but they don’t realize that there is no reason for ‘Rats to vote for a RINO when there’s a liberal ‘Rat running.

It stands to figure a Democrat would prefer Rooty, but you notice he did not say he would vote for him.
He wishes us to prefer Rooty as the nominee. Very telling.
My preference still lies with Duncan Hunter,I think he is a great guy, but I will support Fred.

This is exactly why Rudy is no republican, but a rat in repub clothing.
To: Liz
LOL, I think Rudy G., would disagree with this Clinton minion, since he routinely slams her and her Hillary Care, on the campaign trail.
To: Liz
He says "a big part of me would like to see the former mayor win the nomination."
But a much bigger part of him wants to make sure the Republicans nominate a candidate who will lose the general election.
I suspect this guy is worried that Giuliani (as the most "centrist" Republican) actually has a good chance to win the general election and is hoping and praying Giuliani is not the Republican nominee.
BTW, before I get flamed, I am not a Giuliani supporter. Just giving my opinion as to what this democrat thinks.
