Kuwaiti newspaper says Turkish intelligence provided Israel with information on targets Air Force allegedly attacked last week without Turkish government's authorization

Turkish intelligence provided Israel with information on the Syrian targets allegedly attacked by the Air Force last week without the Turkish government's authorization, Kuwaiti newspaper Al-Jareeda reported Thursday.

Alleged Israeli Attack

Al-Jareeda quoted several sources as saying that Israel and senior Turkish military personnel coordinated Israel's invasion of Turkish airspace during the operation to send a message to the ruling Justice and Development party, or AKP. Senior military officials in Turkey, most of whom are secular, oppose the Islamist party's platform.

According to the sources, AKP member and newly-elected President Abdullah Gul is not doing enough to prevent the transfer of arms from Iran to terror groups in Syria and Lebanon via Turkey.

However, the London-based Arabic newspaper al-Sharq al-Awsat reported that IDF Chief of Staff Gabi Ashkenazi refused to take a call from his Turkish counterpart, who asked for clarifications on the attack.

An Israeli diplomatic source said last Saturday that Turkey asked Israel for clarifications after finding two fuel tanks on its territory near the Syrian border allegedly belonging to Israeli warplanes,

Furthermore, Turkey's top-selling Hurriyet newspaper carried photographs of what it said were fuel tanks jettisoned by Israeli F-15Is sent to gather intelligence on Syrian installations near the Turkish border.

and the plot thickens further . . .

i know there is no love lost bwtn Syrian and Turkey, but i thought with the new Islamic party taking the reigns of govt and the cooperation bwtn Turkey and Iran lately regarding the Kurdish issue that they would stay out of this. Admittedly, i'm not all that informed about the Turkish intelligence apparatus, who are allegedly the source of "assistance"

The Turks have long known their future lies with the West. Hell, they’re a member of NATO and trying to get into the EU. Not a huge surprise here, since they’re not exactly cozy with Syria.

My guess is they’re just saying they weren’t authorized in order to give Erdogan some breathing space vis-a-vis the hard-core Islamists in his government. This is like saying that LeMay in the ‘50’s ordered overflights of Soviet territory without either White House knowledge or approval. Yeah, right.

Turkey and Israel have cooperated on regional issues for years. Turkey’s secularist military has a vested interest in keeping the lid on Islamist movements, or the supporters thereof.

but.. the Turkish military apparatus and the newly elected govt. are 2 different animals...the military being the secular guardians of the constitution. I wouldn’t be surprised if this was an attempt to undermine the new govt’s image in the minds of other Islamic nations. After all it does appear the two branches are headed for some sort of clash soon...kinda like how the CIA undermined Bush

but the way i read the article is that this is neither the military (secular) or the govt (Islamis), this is their intelligence apparatus and i’m not sure where their allegiances lie

Turkey: Hey. Did you guys dump a few empty fuel tanks on our border with Syria?
Israel: Yea. Thanks for the intel.
Turkey: Your welcome. Keep up the good work. And thanks for the free scrape metal. We can always use a hand out.

Yeah, Turkey is very self-serving. We saw that in the run up to Saddam’s replacement when they bartered with planners on how to let the 4th Div through.

Yea. They really screwed us on that one. A lot of those early al Qaeda goons Saddam allowed to work in the bio/chemical terror camps they had set up north would have been taken out with their occupants by our Airborne boys in those first few days if the 4th Div where allowed to ingress into Iraq via. the Turkish airfields. For a NATO member to treat us the way they did was simply wrong.
