SAMPSON COUNTY, N.C. – On the sixth anniversary of the Sept. 11 attacks, students at one high school were not allowed to wear clothes with an American flag.
Under a new school rule, students at Hobbton High School are not allowed to wear items with flags, from any country, including the United States.

Unfortunately we aren't immune to stupidity in the N.C. Education system. Certainly doesn't make me proud to live in N.C.

The Flag Code Section 8 (d), (g), (h), (i), and (j):
(d) The flag should never be used as wearing apparel, bedding, or drapery. It should never be festooned, drawn back, nor up, in folds, but always allowed to fall free.
....(g) The flag should never have placed upon it, nor on any part of it, nor attached to it any mark, insignia, letter, word, figure, design, picture, or drawing of any nature.
(h) The flag should never be used as a receptacle for receiving, holding, carrying, or delivering anything.
(i) The flag should never be used for advertising purposes in any manner whatsoever. It should not be embroidered on such articles as cushions or handkerchiefs and the like, printed or otherwise impressed on paper napkin or boxes or anything that is designed for temporary use and discard. Advertising signs should not be fastened to a staff or halyard from which the flag is flown.
(j) No part of the flag should ever be used as a costume or athletic uniform. However, a flag patch may be affixed to the uniform of military personnel, firemen, policemen, and members of patriotic organizations. The flag represents a living country and is itself considered a living thing. Therefore, the lapel flag pin being a replica, should be worn on the left lapel near the heart.

The image of the flag still represents our country, whether it’s on a flagpole or t-shirt.
The existing laws are dumb, and seem to me to be wildly unconstitutional. As in... excuse me, government? You’re telling me I can’t wear a certain image on my t-shirt because it’s you’ve mandated that it’s disrespectful to do so?
In fact, most people who wear flags on clothing mean it as a show of patriotism. I don’t see anything wrong with that, laws or no laws.
I’ll agree that THE Flag should not be a T-shirt. In other words, I shouldn’t take a flag, cut it, and sew it’s pieces together to make a shirt.

It seems to me that you don't have the proper reverence for the flag. Does it bother you when you crumple up a T-shirt with the flag on it and throw it in the laundry with your dirty socks and underwear?
Yeah. It’s called fear of the ACLU and wasting money defending the school system against BS lawsuits. However, I personally think students should be able to wear a flag of their choice as far as nationality is concerned. Where’s the tolerance seminars after the initial problem? Can’t blame the American students from getting miffed, but, they shouldn’t have resorted to fighting other than verbally.
I have reverence for the Bible and it’s message. I have reverence for THE Flag, not a T-shirt.
If I follow your logic, then I should not have several photos taken at Pearl Harbor, the battleship Alabama, the U.S. Capital building, and none of my USPS Stamps; All of which have been on the floor, in a drawer, or next to/stuck to something not “worthy”.
I am not mocking you, but I do wish to express my view that it is possible to take “reverence” so extreme that it becomes “worship”.

I was VERY surprised when I looked up the location of this county. So close to Ft Bragg and Fayette-Nam where we used to be stationed. Very surprised.

The purpose of the clothing is to display the flag. The purpose of your photos is to document where you have been, not to display the flag.
If your purpose is to display the flag, you should follow the Flag Code as that defines how to do so respectfully.
Look, I have a photo on my FR homepage of the US flag on my old submarine in the snow. That isn’t disrespectful. But if I printed it out and put it on a business card it would be. Showing proper reverence for the flag means that it isn’t trivialized. I don’t mean that we need to start worshiping the flag, or yelling at people on the street like the old Colonel I used to know, just that we shouldn’t trivialize it. Wearing it on clothing does just that. It is a form of display of the flag without care.
I agree 100%. The flag was once treated with respect. Now, it is just a fashion statement.
The rule was rescinded because the school system got what it wanted....no g**damn jingoist kids running around wearing American flag images on 9/11.
