FRED'S FLOP
The New York Post ^ | Sept 13,2007 | George F. Will

Thompson, contrary to his current memories, was deeply involved in expanding government restrictions on political speech generally and the ban on issue ads specifically. Yet he told Ingraham "I voted for all of it," meaning McCain-Feingold, but said "I don't support that" provision of it.

Oh? Why, then, did he file his own brief urging the Supreme Court to uphold McCain-Feingold, stressing Congress' especially "compelling interest" in squelching issue ads that "influence" elections?

Most lamely, Thompson takes credit for McCain-Feingold doubling the amount of "hard money" an individual can give to a candidate, which he says reduces the advantages of incumbency. But that is absurd: Most hard money flows to incumbe

"Fred’s popularity is most informative about the dearth of other candidates...not so much about him, as nobody knows anything much about him."

That describes him pretty accurately, I'd say. I think his decision to run is based on what he feels the majority considers to be lacking amongst the field of candidates. And I think he will deliver the goods. In his case, I think the office will make the man and he is aware of and will yield to the needs of the country moreso than any other candidate.

I think he will be able to unify the party. Something no other candidate has the potential or tools to do. And it's going to take strong unity to remove the stench of defeatism many are already affected by -- those who are saying that Hillabeans will rule regardless of who our candidates are.

So where there's Fred, there's hope!

George Open Borders Will...

And I remember him supporting the so called Assault Weapon Ban because "They were the weapons of choice for drug dealers "

Like my rights depend on what drug dealers ( talk about a Failed War )do

There is a big difference between excusing and explaining. There is a large amount of mis and disinformation on Thompson. I will be kind and not refer to them as lies, those things happen, it is part of the game.

The real numbers are there, the facts are out there. Whining about the possible inconsistencies in his abortion stance from 20 years ago or his membership in a Think Tank gets tiresome after a while.

Sorry, Ejonsie, but Fred Thompson’s supporters talk about name recognition and polls-not principles when defending Fred Thompson.

Not me, and not many others I've seen here on FR. And the name's yam, rogue yam.

We all live in the world as it is, but doing so is not a guiding principle.

I disagree on both points. Some people act in a myopic, self-deluded and/or narcissistic manner. Others strive to avoid doing so as a matter of principle.

He thinks that over analyizing it makes him look smart... if most journalists were not as stupid as they actually are, it would not make will look as smart as the misguided percertion today would have you believe.

Will is a RINO who is criticizing a conservative.

Will is criticizing him for not being conservative enough.

Will prefers a RINO.

Why do conservatives pay attention to such disingenuous attacks?

I agree pretty much with what you said, except I would take Hunter over everyone. If push came to shove, though, I would prefer Mitt over Fred. Mainly because Mitt Romney would be a more effective president.

On conservative credentials and the right stand on the issues. Duncan Hunter

On effective executive management. Mitt Romney

On, do you remember Jimmy Carter? Fred Thompson

HC will be the next President. We need to come to terms with this.

We'll see, but I don't think so.

I agree with you, there does seem to be quite a bit of projection going on here. It's understandable given the quality of the crop.

I am interested, though, in which of Admiral Painter's lines are being posted as Fred quotes: "This business will get out of control, it will get out of control and we'll be lucky to live through it" or "The Russians don't take a dump, son, without a plan"?

FEARLESS PREDICTION:
Fred Thompson, if elected, will do about as well in the position (and satisfy conservatives) as much as G.W. Bush has done.

Reagan made mistakes and reversed himself or stated his regrets.

AIDS policy
Immigration

and others.

The key is that RR was willing to acknowledge his errors and take responsibility for them. Ths same is trus of FDT but not of others including GWB.

Reagan wasn’t the prefect conservative. Time has polished his image as conservative’s conservative. Same as Goldwater.

When he was California’s governor he signed into law Cali ‘s first Abortion law. Futhermore he never personally spoke before any anti abortion rally while he was pres.

The Deficiet doubled and several SC justices were turned out to be liberals or moderates at best.

Reagan was a great man and deserves hisd place in history but he had his flaws.

Just like Fred.
