ICE: Tab to remove illegal residents would approach $100 billion

It would cost at least $94 billion to find, detain and remove all 12 million people believed to be staying illegally in the United States, the federal government estimated Wednesday.

Julie Myers, the head of Immigration and Customs Enforcement, gave the figure during a hearing before a Senate committee Wednesday.

She acknowledged it was based on "very rough calculations."

An ICE spokesman later said the $94 billion did not include the cost of finding illegal immigrants, nor court costs -- dollar amounts that are largely unknowable.

He said the amount was calculated by multiplying the estimated 12 million people by the average cost of detaining people for a day: $97. That was multiplied by the average length of detention: 32 days.

ICE officials also considered transportation costs, which average $1,000 per person.

But that amount can vary widely, the spokesman said. Some deportees are simply driven by bus across the border, while others must take charter planes to distant countries, he said.

Finally, the department looked at personnel costs, bringing the total to roughly $94 billion.

The statistic is likely to become one more piece of fodder in the heated debate between the Bush administration -- which has fought for a "path to citizenship" for people who have lived peaceably in the United States -- and those who want to see more aggressive enforcement of immigration laws, up to, and including, the deportation of all illegal immigrants.

“Tab to remove illegal residents would approach $100 billion”

Sounds like a bargain.

Remove the incentives to stay and then they will leave on their own.

It all comes down to this -- what price do we put on our country?

With systematic crack-downs on employers by both the states and the feds and starting with the largest companies, most illegals will return to Mexico since they won't be able to find employment.

The remaining ones can be given their choice -- either return to Mexico or face mandatory 20 years at hard labor. Since these people are obviously criminals and unfit parents, their children can become wards of the state back in Mexico or, failing that, given up for adoption right here.

I'm sick of playing games with these scumbags.

“Cut ALL benefits to illegals end the anchor baby BS ... Jail and heavily fine anyone who knowingly employees an illegal ... land mine a 100 yard “no mans zone between two walls at the border ... poof problem gone”

Right on, ECV buddie.

When will our touchy-feely self appointed elite learn that there is a difference between a “wetback” and a “legal alien”?

"Best $100 billion we could ever spend."

I agree. The southern and southwestern states are taking the lead in this and it's going to be funny watching millions of these illegals crowd into the northeastern corridor and California. As those liberal states start going broke, they will re-consider their position on "sanctuary." I expect nothing from the feds, not unless Americans suddenly grow a spine and play hardball with them -- for example, mass refusal to pay any federal income tax at all until the last illegal is gone. That would probably get their attention.

All good ideas, except one — the fines. These haven’t worked to deter employers other than those who have already been raided. All the rest are playing the odds and continuing to employ illegals. Only with lengthy imprisonment and confiscation of assets will we get their attention. And those assets will go a long way to defraying the costs of enforcement. Let the illegals and the employers themselves pick up the tab on this.

"Bush is just giving Lip Service to the problem!"

Right. And he always will. His latest "crackdown" measures will be about as effective as the 17 miles of "fence" he's built. He wants those illegals to stay right where they are to facilitate his plan for North American Union. Only the states and the people can stop him and we're starting to do just that.

"I bet we could put everyone who employs illegals in prison for ten years for a lot less than $100 billion."

Especially if they serve those terms at hard labor -- doing the jobs the illegals who fled are too smart to do.

Exactly what I have been saying for years. If there were no jobs or freebie benefits to be had the illegals would go home. We are encouraging them to come and to stay with jobs and government benefits, and it's all because business people ranging from the local Mom and Pop yard care service to the largest, richest multinational corporations want them here for cheap labor.

Greed, corruption in government, and political correctness will be the eventual destruction of the US, and the pace in that direction is quickening with every day that passes.

The better question is what do we do now?

Pay the bill, and don't ever let it happen again. EVER.

Money well spent — could probably raise a public bond to cover it in about a week.

BS- This sounds like another governmentally affiliated scab trying to make another buck. She should be charged that amount until the job is completed.

100B to secure our country, make our cities safer, reduce the cost of healthcare and other social services, lower insurance rates, and open jobs to American Citizens.

Dang. That's a frigging bargain.

Julie Myers?

PPPPPPpffffffffffftttttttttttt.

Strict workplace enforcement and cutting off all social services is all that’s needed. They will self deport. This has already been proven.

Exactly! Where else in this world could someone with as little as a 6th grade education be rewarded with benefits, healthcare and social security for the rest of their lives, just for picking produce, etc.

No wonder they don't want to leave.
