Hsu's to blame?
NRO Corner ^ | September 12, 2007 | Mark Hemingway

Geraghty has some great stuff about Hsu at The Campaign Spot, but here's my round-up of today's Hsu news. There's another very good piece in The New York Times that contains this jaw dropper:

The campaign is refunding $850,000 to these donors, viewing the money as tainted. Yet the campaign is also risking another public relations mess by saying that it would take back the money if it clearly came from the donor’s bank account, not from Mr. Hsu or another source ... The campaign will try to get most of the donors to give the money back right after the refunds, said a senior Democratic strategist who advises Mrs. Clinton’s campaign. “That’s the plan,” the strategist said.

Uh, okay. No way that could backfire, particularly since there's a good chance that of the 260 odd donations "bundled" by Hsu at least some them were complicit in fraud along with Hsu. Considering what a good job the campaign did with Hsu's background check, I imagine they won't overlook a thing investigating 260 of his associates. And speaking of fraud, the Wall Street Journal has another great revelatory piece on Hsu:

New documents reviewed by The Wall Street Journal may help point to an answer: A company controlled by Mr. Hsu recently received $40 million from a Madison Avenue investment fund run by Joel Rosenman, who was one of the creators of the Woodstock rock festival in 1969. That money, Mr. Rosenman told investors this week, is missing.

Funny that the Woodstock founder is such a capitalist, though maybe after falling for Hsu's schemes not a very good one. The Times piece also offers a good explanation for why this story isn't dominating the news more. Both Edwards and Obama have their own campaign finance scandals and are in no position to call out the frontrunner. A man who bundled $125K to Edwards is facing charges he used straw donors to funnel money, and Obama's still holding on to money from a Chicago developer facing federal corruption charges.

Finally, I know that media bias is frequent topic here at NR, but I just want to say the major newspapers thus far have done GREAT job covering this story.

I agree but CNN/msNBC/FNC need to do more still, IMO.

Fact checking here.. what was Hillary’s earmark for the “Bethel Woods Interpretive Center” (Woodstock hippy museum) ????

I think there might be a real connection here...

No way her campaign wasn’t complicit. If they knew where to give it back they knew where it came from.

Do the Clintons always do things in a backhanded way?

She wants to make a big deal of returning the money, but then saying they will accept these contributions back?

What the heck?

Is this just more Clinton fundraising crapola? Just like Bill and the fund raising coffees and renting the Lincoln bedroom?

Too bad she didn’t say “macaca” or “f-ing Jew bastard.” She’d be gone.

Funny that the Woodstock founder is such a capitalist,

I don't find that contradictory. The guy put a bunch of musicians on stage, charged money to see them and made a bundle. (Although I don't know how much he actually netted after all the expenses were paid.) But that is what entreupenurship is all about. It's not the message, it's the bottom line.

But on the other stuff, I agree completely.

Of course she (the one that shall not be named) will make a big deal of returning the money....

"See, we did the right thing here, we returned the money!"

Followed immediately by her statement that these donors can - and should - give again.

Pure greed, IMHO.

Show some class....deal with the tainted fund raiser issue. Then off-line reengage the donors.

She made it sound so..so..Cynthia...obvious....gimme money...gimme money...

Absolutely no class, can't spell "class", etc.

But then we are talking about the Clinton's, aren't we.

“The campaign will try to get most of the donors to give the money back right after the refunds”

That’s pathetic. The people were tricked/coerced into giving the money in the first place, and now the campaign is going to ask them to kick in again? There’s no end to the nerve of these idiots. An excellent example of politicians looking out for the little guy.

I’m afraid our politicians have become an aristocratic class - and not a very useful one, at that.

I understand she’s done the second one.

Although I don't know how much he actually netted after all the expenses were paid

Irregardless [sic] of the massive gate crashing, approximately 60,000+ tickets per day were sold at $6.50 each, which over the course of 3 days would gross ~$1,300,000 ... overall expenses were ~$2.7 million for an initial net loss. However, the festival itself wasn't really intended to be a money maker .... the fortune was to be made by the movie and albums of the event, which it did, grossing approx $50 million by 1979!

Nice little ROI there, ehhh ?

You are correct, sir. And I have to admit that I bought the 4 CD album. But I only watch the movie when it is a rerun on unknown cable channels.

"See, we did the right thing here, we returned the money!"

Try that with the cops. "Ok officer those stolen DVD players in my garage are being returned to the store, so no harm, no foul, right?"

Hey, if it works for HRC, it's good enough for me and you, right?
