A cleaning accident with a petroleum-based acid liquid? How did the cleaning crew ‘accidentally’ make long vertical scratches/gouges in the statues? Were they cleaning with a dremel?

I know you are new, so I am just joshing you a bit, but...if it had been a cleaning accident, the Park Service would have figured that out by now, even if they do have more than their share of PC loving dim bulbs there.
