Yes, we know it sounds hard to believe, but a man in Erie, Pennsylvania, has apparently managed to set fire to a vial of salt water with a self-built radio frequency generator. When John Kanzius tried to desalinate seawater with a device he had created to (supposedly) treat cancer, he found he could keep the water burning like a candle as long as it was exposed to the proper frequencies.
Not surprisingly, many in the scientific community initially dismissed Kanzius' claim as a hoax. However, when Rustum Roy - a professor of chemistry at Penn State University - took him up on the challenge and attempted to recreate the experiment, he was amazed to see that it actually worked. And, no, there were no tricks to it either (or electrodes, as many thought).
According to Roy, the salt water itself isn't actually burning - what happens is that the radio frequency helps weaken the bonds holding together the water's constituents, releasing the bound hydrogen which burns when exposed to the frequency's energy field. At a temperature of around 3,000°F, the flame reflects a tremendous energy output, Roy explained.
Roy, who deems the discovery "the most remarkable in water science in 100 years," will now take up further research with the Departments of Energy and Defense to investigate its potential applications as a source of alternative energy. "We will get our ideas together and check this out and see where it leads. The potential is huge," he said.
Now we're talking clean energy.

So the solution is to burn our food and boil our water for energy now? For some reason I want to survive and this isn’t helping. ;-)
Notice in the you tube video, the scale on his “RF machine” is labeled Watts, with a scale from 0 to 1200. with the lowest non zero number of 200 watts. A properly scaled laboratory instrument would nominally run at half scale - 600 watts. In other words, he is putting about 600 watts of power in, to get about a “candle power” out. With this type of efficiency, you could drive an automobile with the power of a nuclear reactor. Will work great, when every one has their own nuclear reactor.

First, get a millions watts of power. Then blast the salt water until it catches fire. Yeah, makes sense. What do they create the wattage for the RF from? Oh, electricity?
I disagree. An internal combustion engine uses a hot flame from petroleum products to turn a very inefficient engine. These engines not only power vehicles, but all of it’s accessories like air conditioning, water pump, alternator, power steering ect. Since most RF signals are very easy to produce, I am pretty sure you could easily utilize a 1500 to 3000 degree flame to run a generator capable of producing it. I say this not as a scientist but as a pretty good gear head that has built such things as airplanes, backhoes, and several cars.

Googling John Kanzius will yield lots of information on this experiment. It looks like he is directing an RF frequency of 13.56Mhz at 200 watts of power to generate this effect. Its taking more power to generate the flame then output power that can be converted to work energy.
That’s gonna be one log-@$$ed extention cord hanging out the back of my F-250, connecting me to the BGE substation. I figure at today’s recently increased rates my weekly electric bill will be in the neighborhood of $900 to burn the salt water (hydrogen) required for my weekly commute. Better get back to the drawing board Mr. Kanzius.
Back when the SuperCollider was being built in Texas, Rustum Roy published an article in Physics Today questioning the enormous amount of money that was to be spent on this, and presumably diverted from other areas of scientific research. Leon Lederman, a Nobel Prize winner and SuperCollider backer, responded in a letter that questioned whether Rustum Roy was even a real person. Another writer then pointed out that making fun of Roy's name was a sign that the SuperCollider backers did not have a valid argument. Not too long after this the SuperCollider was defunded.
Energy in >= energy out. Now way around that. However, the device could be useful as a blow torch.

The energy required to excite those molecules to break those bonds so they can burn is greater than the energy that comes from the burning of the gasses.
Then, there is the problem of embrittlement of the metals in the engine.

Nothing in this story makes sense. Nothing passes the smell test.
Ohhhhhh, don't get me started on that boondogle.
A gallon of gasoline contains about 60 kilowatt-hours of energy. If this "water burning" device is using 600 watts of RF enefgy, then it is consuming about 670 watts (at 90% efficiency).
A small plasma ball lamp like this 
uses about 12 watts of electrical energy. If you place your hand on the surface of the ball you will feel heat. Since the small Stirling engines used in the classroom can be made to run off the heat of your hand, the heat of this plasma ball lamp also probably should run a Stirling engine like in the video.
In comparison, a common laser pointer produces energy of .001-.005 watts.
Chemical Oxygen Iodine Laser (COIL) used in the Airborne Laser (for shooting down ICBMs is in the megawatt (1,000,000 watt) class.
Both are lasers, but the similarity ends there. Just because this guy's aparatus produce heat, light and turns a small engine does not put it in same power output class or efficiency (albeit limited efficiency) class of an auto engine.
When you recombine hydrogen with oxygen it returns to water, the exact same amount you started with before you split it. Nothing is consumed other than the energy first used to split the water into hydrogen and oxygen in the first place. The water/hydrogen oxygen cycle is just a means to transport the original energy used to start the cycle. It still isn’t the source of the energy.
