9/11 symbolism murky backdrop for report on Iraq
San Francisco Chronicle ^ | 9/10/7 | Joe Garofoli

Posted on 09/10/2007 10:45:09 AM PDT by SmithL

The nation will receive a long-awaited Pentagon report on the war in Iraq today - the day before the sixth anniversary of the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks.

Even though the bipartisan Sept. 11 commission said there was no credible connection between the terrorist attacks and former Iraqi President Saddam Hussein, the anniversary of the attacks and the debate about what to do next in Iraq are once again blurring together in the media blender.

While Congress and the nation hear today from Gen. David Petraeus and U.S. Ambassador Ryan Crocker, television viewers in four states will see an anti-war ad featuring children dressed in military fatigues, training to be soldiers in an "endless war."

Part of a $12 million summerlong anti-war campaign funded by liberal organizations such as MoveOn.org and private donors, the ad is running over the next week in four states represented by pro-war senators. It is focused partially at "security moms" - swing voters who supported Republicans in 2004 because the GOP appealed to their post-9/11 concerns, but who now may be disenchanted with the direction of the war. It never mentions Sept. 11. Instead, the ad's deep-voiced narrator warns that if Republican senators don't vote to stop the war, "Should we start training our children now?"

Meanwhile, a multi-spot, $15 million pro-war TV ad campaign continues across many of the same markets, with one showing the burning World Trade Center - an image that television networks rarely show. Produced by a conservative group fronted by former Bush administration spokesman Ari Fleischer, the ad is narrated by a disabled veteran who cautions viewers about the dangers of an unnamed "they." "They attacked us," the narrator says. "They won't stop in Iraq."

I don't know if it was Greenberg or Carville, but at some point a Democrat focus group determined that compartmentalizing the Iraq war separate from the war with radical Islam is a political winner. Obviously Joe Garofoli got his talking points memo.

Factually incorrect. Another Leftist screaming the lie. There was NO DIRECT evidence of Saddam’s complicity in 09-11. That is not the same thing as no credible linkage.

Here is just some of the factual evidence.http://www.freerepublic.com/focus/f-news/1560825/posts

There is plenty of credible linkage just nothing conclusive.

1) The 9-11 commission was a joke and reached the conclusion they wanted to reach. Why did Sandy Burgler take the risk he did?

2) There are connections between Iraq and Al Qaeda. There were at the time of 9-11, there were at the time of the commission, and there have been more found in the translated captured Iraqi documents.

Not seeing connections is to deny the tangled web of dictators and radical Islam against the US and freedom itself.

The fact that 9 out of 10 liberal rants about the WOT begin with “and we all know that Iraq had nothing to do with 9-11” is enough to convince me that Saddam did it.

From my files:

In in 1998, an Arab intelligence officer, who knows Saddam personally, predicted in Newsweek: "Very soon you will be witnessing large-scale terrorist activity run by the Iraqis." The Arab official said these terror operations would be run under "false flags" --spook-speak for front groups--including bin Laden's organization.

Then there were the predictions by an Iraqi with ties to Iraqi intelligence, Naeem Abd Mulhalhal, in Qusay's own newspaper several weeks before the attacks that stated bin Laden would “demolish the Pentagon after he destroys the White House and ”bin Laden would strike America “on the arm that is already hurting.” (referencing a second IRAQI sponsored attack on the World Trade Center). Another reference to New York was “[bin Laden] will curse the memory of Frank Sinatra everytime he hears his songs.” (e.g., “New York, New York”) which identified New York, New York as a target. Mulhalhal also stated, “The wings of a dove and the bullet are all but one and the same in the heart of a believer." which references an airplane attack.

The Arabic language daily newspaper Al-Quds Al-Arabic also cited the cooperation between Iraq, bin Laden and Al December 1998 editorial, which predicted that “President Saddam Hussein, whose country was subjected to a four day air strike, will look for support in taking revenge on the United States and Britain by cooperating with Saudi oppositionist Osama Bin-Laden, whom the United States considers to be the most wanted person in the world.” This info is in the link provided below. How could these people have had foreknowledge without Iraq being involved?

Source for this info

Warning...slow loading .pdf file. This was from a lawsuit filed against Iraq after 9/11...the court ruled against Iraq.

There was also another lawsuit filed by the family of John O’Neill (a former FBI agent who captured Ramzi Yousef after the 1993 WTC bombings) after he died in the WTC on 9/11. His personal files from his years of traveling around the world investigating al-Qaeda are were used as evidence in the lawsuit. The evidence includes documents unearthed in the headquarters of the Mukhabarat (Iraq's intelligence service) and information gleaned from the interrogation of both al-Qaeda and Iraqi prisoners. (Link below). It also quotes Vincent Cannistraro, the former CIA counter-terrorism chief, who stated in October 2000 that Iraq had been wanting to carry out terrorist attacks, and that the Iraqi military had been in contact with Osama bin Laden.

We know from these IIS documents that beginning in 1992 the former Iraqi regime regarded bin Laden as an Iraqi Intelligence asset. We know from IIS documents that the former Iraqi regime provided safe haven and financial support to an Iraqi who has admitted to mixing the chemicals for the 1993 attack on the World Trade Center. We know from IIS documents that Saddam Hussein agreed to Osama bin Laden's request to broadcast anti-Saudi propaganda on Iraqi state-run television. We know from IIS documents that a "trusted confidante" of bin Laden stayed for more than two weeks at a posh Baghdad hotel as the guest of the Iraqi Intelligence Service.

Abu Nidal, September 11 and Saddam The terrorist network may be closer knit than we think.

"2) There are connections between Iraq and Al Qaeda..."

I'll show you a direct connection between al-Qaeda and Iraq. Just read Osama's infamous 1998 Fatwa. He calls for the killing of innocent Americans and justifies this slaughter in 25% of his fatwa in the name of Iraq.
