Mrs. Trooprally called me this evening to tell me that she and her husband, as well as Concretebob, saw damage along almost the entire length of the Vietnam Memorial Wall. They found this damage this morning, when they walked through the area before participating in the September 11th Freedom Walk.
Concretebob was told by a National Park Service employee that the damage was done on Friday night. There was no police report taken or written about the vandalism, apparently. And the damage was still very much there today.
Here are a few of the photos that Mrs. Trooprally took this morning...
This first one is not so noticeable, but as they walked into the center, it got worse.
It looks like the person who did this walked along The Wall with some type of container, perhaps hidden at their side so that they could squirt the oily substance without being caught in the act.
The names along the lower part of The Wall appear to have taken the brunt of the damage.
Because of the reflective nature of The Wall, Mrs. Trooprally had a tough time capturing the extent of the damage. Mr. Trooprally said that the oily substance has discolored the shiny stone, but that it has been absorbed into the more porous area where the names are etched into The Wall.
Oh, yeah. Sure. Jim-Bob, who works at the Jiffy Lube forgot he had a squirt can of oil in his hand when he went to visit The Wall in the middle of the night Friday. And then, his hand went into some weird spasms, accidentally squirting oil on The Wall and the ground/sidewalk.
For almost the entire length of The Wall.
I can believe that.
Nah.
Thanks.
Well, sure. What are the odds they are right? Pretty low, IMO.
I have no problem making that prediction.
You will find it is the usual tactic of the left to do things like...oh...burn a church and blame right wingers and so on. It would be even MORE pathetic if it were not so predictable.
“Clear” as in ‘not dark like motor oil or something’, not ‘clear’ as in ‘I totally know what I’m talking about’.
This would be a great opportunity for the pervert Larry Flynt to make one of his million dollar offers for information leading to the arrest of the coward(s) who committed this attrocity.
I guess he only offers rewards for negative information pertaining to conservatives.
EODGUY
"sds" is the reborn Students For A Democratic Society, the ones who bombed places and killed people for peace in the 60s.
When I saw that post, I figured they meant spray paint, like they did to the Capitol at January 27th "peace march".
In addition, the poster mentioned that the polished portions looked "cloudy"...meaning that the polished finished may have been removed or damaged; one can easily do that with many substances. This creates a major problem, because although it can be "repolished" those areas would then not necessarily match the rest of the panels which have had the "wear and tear" of wind, rain, and time.
They probably haven't done anything, because it will take an expert in this field to survey the damage and suggest a solution. While you can call a guy out of the phone book to repair your kitchen counter, this is a huge National Monument that we are talking about.
(Although this wouldn’t explain the comments by “SDS” posted earlier.)
That kind of oil is darker and more viscous usually, isn’t it?
(Thank you for the opportunity to use the word ‘viscous’, I don’t get to do that much!)
It works best of anything I have tried, and I have been examining rock samples from oil based drilling mud for well over 20 years.
As for the puke(s) who did this, I think this would be a fine time to bring back public flogging and the cat.
The first time I visited it was late at night. It was very, very quiet there, even though there were a few other people around. Everyone was very respectful and hushed. It was like a spiritual experience.
I agree with you : most moving memorial I’ve ever seen.
It choked me up and I do not cry easily, nor did I know anyone on the wall.
And you know that how? I'm not disputing that the memorial is a solemn, even sacred, site, but there is too little information to conclude that it was a deliberate act. If it was, it was an incredibly wimpy one -- scattered splotches at ankle-height. You'd think that someone who wanted to make a statement would do it above a mumble.
In the first photo on the original post, there is bare earth and what appears to be a gap between the soil and the top of the granite slabs. That suggests to me that the grass atop the wall was recently edged. A gas-powered edger leaking oil, or fuel, could fit the pattern of the spots observed, as far as I can tell from the photos.
All I'm saying is that it's premature -- though it's a favorite FR pastime -- to assume that someone did it on purpose, and from there to guess why and then follow up to what should be done to them and how we can tell al Qaeda was behind it.
If it turns out to be something innocent, the folks who assumed have a choice of looking silly, or of denying the evidence and insisting there's some kind of cover-up, and thereby looking sillier.
If it was 2-cycle oil mixed with gasoline it would be pretty thin.
You know that this was oil from a squirt can? Please share your source.
They’ve been there for a while correct?
I see I should bring bail for the 15th...
Find them. Fix them. Finish them.

It was soiled. "Desecrated" requires intent and motive.
A boy scout who respectfully burns a soiled flag and a punk who burns a flag in protest perform the same physical act. Only one is a desecration. And you cannot tell which is which by looking at the ash.
Sure you can, the ash on the punk's ass will have the outline of my foot.
