A lot of the readers there who post comments apparently believe the Osama is a puppet of either the CIA or the Bush administration (as with many foreigners, and many Americans, they seem to have a tendency to believe both the CIA and the Bush administration are right-wing).
However, from your post, it seems that this liberal was the initiator of strong opinion, and that you only offered yours in return. Also, tend to figure that exposure to other opinions is generally a good idea, so even though the liberal might be angry, you could be helping him and could have given him something to consider.
So, basically, do not shy away from giving your strong opinions if others give theirs first, and even though you might offend, you could also help in the long run.

So the guy was raising money for MoveOn.org and has crazy political views. He still has the right to go around soliciting for funds (in general, you could have had one of those 'No Solicitors' signs), and he still has the right to frequent the neighborhood, even if he didn't live there (which he apparently does).

I found that remaining absolutely calm is the absolutely perfect response. They spout of the various BDS claims(implosion, PNAC, whatever), refute them with known cites and sources...they up the rhetoric, getting louder and louder and faster until they are raving lunatics. Just stand there, tilt your head a bit, blink a few times at their confused thoughts till they run away. It’s quite amusing.
