Avoiding Kids: How Men Cope With Being Cast as Predators
Wall Street Journal ^ | September 6, 2007 | JEFF ZASLOW

These days, if Rian Romoli accidentally bumps into a child, he quickly raises his hands above his shoulders. "I don't want to give even the slightest indication that any inadvertent touching occurred," says Mr. Romoli, an economist in La Cañada Flintridge, Calif.

Ted Wallis, a doctor in Austin, Texas, recently came upon a lost child in tears in a mall. His first instinct was to help, but he feared people might consider him a predator. He walked away. "Being male," he explains, "I am guilty until proven innocent."

In San Diego, retiree Ralph Castro says he won't allow himself to be alone with a child -- even in an elevator.

That used to be a common expression and I would not have read anything into it.

Interesting.

It sure damn seems that way lately. I believe it was always going on personally, it just wasn’t talked about or known as much.

When I was young (I’m 62) we were mostly blind to what was going on. Now we see more than is there. It will take time but I think things will settle to some realistic middle ground.

Yikes! That hurt worse than Clint’s statement.

Ouch, I wasn't trying to hurt.

Exactly. We would want our children to go to a parent or responsible adult if they see behavior that isn't right and report it to them. We should be focusing on conduct rather than people and tell them that people who do the right thing should be admired and imitated rather than shunned.

They also get far less when sentencing than males, and even less if they are pretty, cry a lot, and say they are sorry. Check out Worldnetdaily’s list of female teacher sex predators and see just how light they get off.

Last I heard, the advice given to little kids who get lost are to look for a mommy with children or babies, or a grandma (old lady) because they are the most likely to be sympathetic and safe.

That is true that is is better to be safe than sorry. And even though I don’t like it, I will admit that like other men here I go for the abundance of caution to keep myself safe. A couple of years ago I spent the night at a friend’s house. In the middle of the night for some reason his three year old daughter got up and crawled onto the sofa with me. I told her “I think your Mommy and Daddy want you to get in bed with them”. I was frightened at what my friend and his wife might think when they awoke the next morning to find her sleeping there with me. I mentioned it to them the next day and they just laughed about my concern—all three of their children sleep with them from time to time and I guess they harbor no suspicion about me so they didn’t see a problem. Still I would probably do the same thing again just to be safe.

When my kids were at home and knew the kid, no doubt it would have been different. Come on in. But all a kid has to do today is make a claim and one is tried and convicted. Can’t risk it. Won’t risk it.

I’m a father and grandfather married 35 years. But live in fear of some charge and not willing to risk it.

This is where we are.

If you're old used to the expression then you get it. If not then you might wonder at it.

I think "used to" may be better here. It's been a while, but when&where I grew up such a statement would have been looked at with suspicion. Such might not have been the case elsewhere/when.

Can we put this one to rest? durasell's exonerated, in my mind.

It goes to the double standard. Boys are expected to be initiated into manhood and girls should be virgins until they get married. That explains why males who have sex with teen girls are punished harshly. You don't like it? Life's unfair.

Without factoring in abortion, women are more likely to kill children than men. And I think I read they are 4 times more likely to kill an immediate family member (usually the baby or small child.)

That’s WITHOUT abortion.

That’s not how you are coming across. We could find a story that talks about all the evils of women and say “well here’s the facts gals” and your initial reaction would be ‘don’t paint all of us with the same broad brush.”

That’s the reaction you’re getting from guys here and when they respond with other facts that show women being the majority of abuse cases in certain categories to show that it isn’t as lop-sided as you think (it perhaps could be the slanting of the liberal press??? perhaps??) you get defensive.

Hello,

Do me a favor, would you? Tell the men acting like lunatics on this thread that they’re...acting like lunatics. An intelligent, thoughtful discussion...we can have.

Of course you’re right. Dear Lord a good man lives to protect his wife and children, you think I don’t know this?
The really shocking truth that we, as a society, should face is that the guy who would hurt and abuse us often looks like the Dad we know who locked the doors and scared away the snake.

THAT’s the problem.

I understand about the emasculation of the males in this society. Somewhere though this liberal behavior gets intermingled with reality and it doesn’t help that the normally considerate males on Freerepublic act like idiots when something like this comes up.

For years these same conservative males lamented that the feminazis don’t understand that men and women ARE different. The fact that the males of our species are generally the more aggressive and violent and those of us with common sense know that this is part of a normal biology and the way it should be.

This tendency to aggressiveness plus a larger size doesn’t always fit inside of the social model that makes the species live and thrive. Sheesh. I get it. Sorry if you don’t.

But let a female point this out and damn to hell if we ain’t called names and what? These normal biological differences all of a sudden don’t count when applied to the male?

Any way, I’m going off on a rant and don’t mean to.

All I got to say to fellows on this thread and any other who constantly attack a female who dares to point out a truth that might, if even on the most basic level, seem to follow a feminazi agenda....

Last summer I interfered with a photographer at the beach when he turned his lens towards my step kids.So I'd agree that you'd not do well photographing a kids' playground.

Frank McEnulty, a builder in Long Beach, Calif., was once a Boy Scout scoutmaster. “Today, I wouldn’t do that job for anything,” he says. “All it takes is for one kid to get ticked off at you for something and tell his parents you were acting weird on the campout.”

More excuses for not helping.

I used to be active as a coach and official in Junior Olympic track and field programs. Now I would not even think of it. I see too many parents who are the type who would fabricate a charge at the drop of a hat in order to either hit the lawsuit lottery or just because they like destroying other people (same parents also seem to still have junior high mentalities).

An expression like that avoids the absurdity of an absolute proclamation.

I am an honest man!

-or-

I try to lead an honest life.

Which are you more likely to believe of me?

Females also seem to have the large majority when it comes to stalking and killing a pregnant women and carving it out of her belly for themselves.

Guess we gotta play the odds on this one guys.

Without the political female influence, I think you would find male justice on such perps to be far harsher than is currently the case.

I vehemently agree with you. "political female influence" will be the downfall of this Republic.

Flame away, anyone who wishes. My stance on this will never change.
