At a New York restaurant overlooking Central Park in April 2006, the governor of Pennsylvania sat down to dinner with about a dozen Democratic supporters. The 10-course meal in a private room at Per Se, including dishes like Nova Scotia Lobster Tail "Cuite Sous Vide," cost about $18,000, says a diner who was there. The host, Norman Hsu, was a businessman that the crowd admired but knew little about.
In the past few weeks, much more has become known about Mr. Hsu: That he had filed for bankruptcy twice, including a time in 1990 when he said he had no income, no job, and little more than a Toyota 4-Runner and a jade ring. And that he was wanted by California authorities for grand theft charges to which he had pleaded no contest in 1992, then fled before facing sentencing.
Mr. Hsu turned himself in on that matter a week ago, after news coverage of his past -- which began with a Wall Street Journal article about his unusual campaign giving -- had brought the conviction to light and led politicians to hand over some of his campaign donations to charity. Mr. Hsu posted a $2 million bond -- and then he vanished again. On Wednesday, when he was supposed to appear in court in California, he instead boarded Amtrak's eastbound California Zephyr near Oakland. Along the trip he fell, was taken to a hospital in Grand Junction, Colo., and arrested. On Friday, authorities were taking steps to send him to California.

His story has legs...
Hsu needs 24/7 Federal guard, or he will fall victim to a mysterious case of Arkancide.
LOL! At least you obviously know how to pronounce his name properly, unlike a lot of the news people who have been reading stories about him. I know the name because it is my doctor’s name. Dr. Hsu is a wonderful man and a brilliant neurosurgeon.
"Paging Monica Lewinski ... paging Monica Lewinski!..."
Maybe it’s prudent to check the Zephyr for traces of Polonium?

That is MY thought....some “nurse” might make a “mistake” with an IV drip.....

Colorado? I’m guessing Hsu has that especially virulent strain of TB...
If you were a boy named Hsu you’d run too!
bump
As an IT person, I can say it's definitely an art, but usually you find it in the business or science schools. Maybe in '73 it was all too new to be placed correctly. Wikipedia, I realize.
This boy should have run to China to join John Huang, Charlie Trie, and the other previous Crinton contributors. His ass is grass in the US, in jail or not. I see an “accident” in his future...or a Presidential pardon.
I'm not even buying that. If anyone has actually confirmed it with UC Berkeley, they would have said so. Besides, don't Universities require the written permission of the person whose records you're requesting to confirm a degree?
I think they're just assuming. Hsu's bios no doubt claim that, of course. His buddy from Berkeley talks about their time together in this article. But what does his buddy know for sure? Did they attend commencement together? Attend the same classes for 4 years? Does he even know for sure if Hsu was even enrolled? Hanging out at Berkeley or hanging out at New School and DNC fundraisers--what's the difference? Sounds like the same MO to me.
And how does the WSJ know Hsu has an MBA from Wharton? Because Hsu's Berkeley buddy said so? And he knew, how? Because Hsu told him. Like he told everyone else who probably never checked.
Maybe he does have these degrees. (But earning a degree would contradict the only things we do know for sure about this guy.) More importantly, unless the press has confirmed them, they shouldn't be stating it as fact.
Well, it’s wikipedia. Not sourced from any paper.

The ‘temporary insanity’ defense is as good a theory as any! But can he carry that over to “I didn’t really mean to give the Paws all that money” and make it stick? This whole thing is bizarre! After living on the lam for the last 15 years, I don’t think the judge is going to be too lenient with him, nor believe any excuse he gives for why he didn’t show up to his hearing. At least, I hope not!
I’ve been digging in on other Hsu subjects so I didn’t really follow the arrest. Did they say what Hsu’s intended destination was? Colorado, Chicago, other?
Berkeley/Wharton were part of his resume on the New School website and was included in news articles by the LA Times, and others.
It was also part of his resume published in news articles 20 years ago. (Still doesn’t mean it is true, but below is an example).
THE NEW PIONEERS
BILL ROBINSON
During the launching of his own label earlier this year, Robinson found two areas very difficult: Finding his design identity and relinquishing responsibilities. He feels that so many factors are involved in a new line, that if you don’t give responsibility to others, “It’s tough to find time to design.’ ...

NORMAN HSU
Hsu, 35, was born and raised in Hong Kong, but when he came to the United States in 1969 to attend the University of California at Berkeley as a computer science major, he knew nothing about soft goods manufacturing. Even his MBA from the Wharton School didn’t help much when he and his Hong Kong-based partners formed Laveno Sportswear in San Francisco in 1982. “Luckily, we started Laveno when the economy was on the up side, and not too many companies were in the young men’s business. Still, we made a lot of stupied mistakes. For instance, we only had one size box. So, when we sent out only a few items, we would fill the rest of the box with foam. It wasn’t until we hired someone who knew warehousing and shipping that we found it was easier to cut the boxes down.’ Hsu, who left Laveno in 1984—a year before it went bankrupt—is now a principal in Anaheim, Calif.-based H Two O, Inc., and says he’s learned a lot since he moved from software to soft goods.
