Iran fined $2.65 billion for terrorism
By MATT APUZZO, Associated Press Writer 25 minutes ago
Iran must pay $2.65 billion to the family members of the 241 U.S. servicemen killed in the 1983 bombing of the U.S. Marine barracks in Beirut, a federal judge ruled Friday, calling it the largest-ever such judgment against another country.
Iran has been blamed for supporting the militant group Hezbollah, which carried out the suicide bombing in Beirut. It was the worst terrorist act against U.S. targets until the Sept. 11, 2001 attacks.
Hundreds of people crowded a federal courtroom to hear Friday's ruling. Parents have grown old since their children were killed. Siblings have grown into middle-age. Children have married and started families of their own.
"These individuals, whose hearts and souls were forever broken, waited patiently for nearly a quarter century for justice to be done," U.S District Judge Royce C. Lamberth said as families embraced.
The crowd, many of them weeping, stood and erupted into applause as Lamberth left the bench.
The ruling allows nearly 1,000 family members and estates to try to collect Iranian assets from various sources around the world.

It's about damned time the families of my brothers got some kind of justice out of the US Courts for this.
Next they should sue the Syrians for enabling the attack.
Then we should wipe Assads line from the face of the Earth...

The ruling allows nearly 1,000 family members and estates to try to collect Iranian assets This appears to make it all pointless.

If it's divided evenly for each of the 241 victims, $11 million each. If it's divided evenly over the 1,000 family members and estates, $2.65 million each.

This decision is not necessarily pointless. It is a judgment under which Iranian assets can be seized to satisfy the claim. Granted, there is little chance of getting Iran to pay short of war, but to the extent the U. S. Government will assist in identifying and seizing financial assets, real estate, and property of Iran outside of Iran it could be meaningful. Going after the assets will be resisted by the State Department because it will rock the boat in placed like the UN, but it can be done if the will exists, and I hope it does.

The courts are trying to stop any invasion of Iran. If we stop the oil production they cannot afford to pay so this forces us to do no action.
How’s that for cynical?

IIRC the US froze several billions in Iranian assets here in this country years back.
But personally the only 'assets' of the bastards who murdered my brothers I want to see siezed are their heads. And those I want on pikes outside Camp LeJuene.

It's a lot harder to collect on a judgment than it is to make it.
