Its an announcement that has sent U.S. employers scrambling. The Bush administration served notice that it would crack down on illegal immigration by holding employers responsible for verifying that their workers have valid social-security numbers.
In cases where the social-security number doesnt match the federal database, the employer would have to fire the worker or face fines and felony prosecution. However, a federal judge has put the plan on temporary hold until October to hear arguments. We checked in with businesses, including Californias giant farming industry, to gauge what the impact will be if the plan is finally implemented.
