Voting record as well as inner circle, affiliations, top contributors, etc. will mean more to me, for this candidate and any candidate that matter, than what the campaign crafts in terms of 2008 primary election talking points.

We all know the trick of "run to the right in the primary, run to the center in the general, run to the left when governing". Been there. Done that.

Maybe so 20 or 30 years ago for a naive earlier me, but nowadays, I take a much more discriminating attitude on these things.

The last thing we--and I personally--want to get saddled with is eight more years of "compassionate conservatism, big government, open borders". We need a complete reversal from the current course.

Can Fred do it? I will continue to study it.

So will I, and I’m no pushover when it comes to illegal immigration. Fred won’t get my vote if he’s been wishy washy on this issue.

Amen! "They" say he doesn't stand a chance, but Tancredo's still my guy.

I agree with all those criteria for choosing a candidate. But Fred’s mediocre and indifferent stance regarding illegal immigration is one more factor that should be thrown into the mix.

The main thing that bothers me about Fred is how all the Fredheads come out in force to call you a tinfoil hat type if you question his actual voting records on key issues such as this and his membership in the Council on Foreign Relations, an organization dominated by George Soros and other one-world type. Yes, some people (such as Dick Cheney) are just along for the ride. Perhaps Fred is also . . . but with his supporters so unwilling to address it, I have to wonder.

While Duncan Hunter remains my favorite, I'd sooner take my chances on Mitt Romney. At least he had the excuse of governing an ultraliberal state. Fred Thompson has no such excuse representing relatively conservative Tennessee. Romney is no Ronald Reagan, but he's no G.W.Bush either. With Fred Thompson, I have to wonder.
