The thing about Reagan was that he could say things that might be unpopular, but he could say them in a way where youd find yourself whooping it up afterwards in support. Thompson has that ability. Even though he said what should have been rather unpopular comments about the war, he said it in ways that had the audience cheering in response.
I dont pretent to say that Thompson will be another Reagon. It still remains to be seen whether Ill vote for him. But he does have the ability to draw from across party lines, unless the Leno audience was exclusive to rabid Thompson staff members.
I had been thinking the same - that he has a lot of Reagan's qualities onscreen. I don't know if it's the actor training or just a down home personality that makes you think they're talking to you directly in your living room. It would be nice if he'd turn out to be as conservative as Reagan. So far, I have my doubts. But we desperately need a conservative leader in the GOP. Have for years.
