Jennifer Dunn was a Republican of substance.
In the year after her party surrendered the Senate and House, and in which Republicans seem to be flaking off the national administration like rust, it is especially fitting to recall this state's most prominent Republican woman. The retired six-term congresswoman, who died Tuesday night, was an optimist. She named one of her sons Reagan, after her favorite politician, and she had some of her hero's sunny demeanor. Maybe it fooled some people, but inside she had the will of a rugged politician.
William Safire of The New York Times once wrote, "Why isn't Jennifer Dunn more ambitious?" Perhaps she could have gone further, but in 1988 she took on Rep. Dick Armey of Texas in a fight to be House majority leader. She lost, but was the first woman to have tried.

I wondered why she didn’t run for Senate. Did she die suddenly or was this some disease she was aware of?
Yeah, what a class act. Her death is a loss to America, even with her having retired from public life. I wonder if the Seattle Times was ever as supportive and admiring of her while she was living... Just wondering.
Dunno for sure...earlier news announcements indicated that she collapsed at her home due to an embolism of some sort. From what I’ve read, she died soon thereafter with her family beside her. Who knows what she could have potentially done if she had chanced it? I respect her decision to spend time with her family and away from the cut-throat political scene though, one must NEVER forget his/her roots!
McConnell is a puke.
I speculate she wanted to spend time with her new husband and make some money. She didn’t move back to Pugetopolis after she retired.
Her disease was treatable if caught early, so I’m sure it was a sudden event. We lost a fine lady.
You’re getting it confused. Gorton never quit the Senate, he lost narrowly in 2000 to Cantwell. It was Congresswoman Linda Smith who ran against Patty Murray in 1998. McConnell was not supportive of Smith, who was a big backer of CFR, and she lost. Given the year she was running, even if McConnell had ponied up the $$, she probably still would’ve lost. We only picked off one Senate incumbent that year, and that was Carol Moseley-Braun in IL (and that was because of her corruption).
You are correct. My mistake.
I was a little shocked by the Seattle News media. They actually did a very good job reporting on her life and accomplishments. However, did any of you check out the comments on the DU that day? Sick sick people.
