After spending months testing the waters for a presidential run, Sen. Fred Thompson has made his candidacy official.
"I am running for president of the United States," he said during a taping of NBC's "The Tonight Show with Jay Leno," drawing applause and cheers from the audience.
Thompson will also talk about his decision to join the race for the Republican presidential nomination in a webcast scheduled to go online early Thursday.
A five-day campaign tour will follow Thompson's announcement, sources said last week.
Thompson will stump in Iowa, New Hampshire, South Carolina and Florida. Then it's on to Lawrenceburg, Tennessee -- his hometown -- for a "homecoming" on September 15, the sources said.
Political observers say Thompson may be late entering the race. The first voting is only four months away and the others have been in Iowa, New Hampshire, South Carolina and beyond for months.
"Expectations are sky high, which means he better perform flawlessly out of the box or a lot of people are going to start grumbling that he's not the great savior we thought he was," said Republican pollster Whit Ayres.
Thompson created a fundraising committee that allowed him to begin raising money for a possible presidential campaign on June 1. He's angling for a conservative base that hasn't coalesced around one candidate.
During his speeches this summer, he has promised his commitment to outlaw abortion is more than lip service.
"I don't think as the president you can do anything halfway," Thompson said in August.
On Iraq, he's in no rush to talk about bringing troops home. "Right now we need to make every effort to make sure that we don't get run out of there with our tails between our legs," Thompson said.

Jay Leno??? lol
Just ‘googled’ “Reagan CFR”—and he was the last President to NOT be a member. Ford, Nixon, Bush41 were all members.
That was awesome!
FRED ROCKS!!!!!!
Jay Leno??
DId it already happen??
Say hello to our next President!
GO FRED GO!
See, you're part way there already! Admitting your problem is the first step to solving it.
He won an election.
Capitalization rules are tricky, though I will agree with you that the phrase "President of the United States" should certainly have been capitalized. I've not read any good formulation of when terms like "President", "Court", and "Constitution" should be capitalized though I would guess a good rule would be that:
damn....I thought you were like 30 or so FMDJ?
33 as of last week. And my pop culture refs run a lot older than that.
I salute you...most young whipper snappers yer age wouldn’t even know which bed the Petries slept in.
It’s weird, we were about the earliest folks in Nashville to get cable, almost a quarter-century ago (remember Viacom ?), back when it was all of 36 channels, most of which were Community Access and non-stations (only 3 movie channels, HBO/Showtime/Cinemax, and Disney was a premium channel that had yet to launch). The ‘60s tv reruns I watched at the time were scarcely 15 years old or so. It would be like a kid watching “Fresh Prince” reruns from 1992 today. It’s weird watching some shows I used to see on OnDemand’s TubeTime as a little kid in primetime that are now pushing 30.
Of course, probably should’ve spent a little less time in front of the cable and more time out living life.
The Clinton slime machine will now go into action. They will find people who will lie about made-up events that never took place 30 years ago. They will comb through everything that he ever said or wrote in their stalinist desire to destroy him.
I do realize that anyone can apply for membership in the CFR. I was a member of the IRI (International Republican Institute) for some years. But I’ve done substantial reading on the CFR, and, NO, not all from the John Birch Society, but from varied sources. I believe that there are upper echelons of those kinds of organizations (I'm not necessarily referring to the IRI) that are secretive and have views and intentions not consistent with American national sovereignty. I don’t believe they would discuss this on their web site. and I believe that people could be life-long members, even contributing members, and not know of much that is happening at the top.
You totally misread my post, I am FRed supporter and was just expressing CONCERN.
Did you ever consider that, just maybe, I was expressing concern about him?
I support FRed 100% and didn’t realize some people were so sensitive about what is posted about him. Sorry you misinterpreted my post.
