For some.
The word actually has two original meanings
1) The leftist intellectuals who became not only anti-communist but questioned the planning and goals of the Great Society.
2) Those whose ideology matches that of the first group.

The fact is that many prominent neocons are Jews, but others are are Catholic and some Protestant. It was largely a movement of white-ethnics moving away from New Deal politics.
