More evidence that Al Gore's Live Earth flop was indeed the beginning of the end to the public's fascination with global warming: Leonardo DiCaprio's recently released film on the subject has bombed with moviegoers.

As reported by Fox News's Roger Friedman Wednesday (emphasis added throughout):

His environmental documentary, "The 11th Hour," has been a total bust at the box office. After 18 days in release, the film has grossed only $417,913 from ticket sales.

As Friedman pointed out, these are horrible numbers:

The 90-minute snore-fest is playing on 111 screens this week, but that number is likely to be reduced this Friday. The film will be sent to DVD heaven after that.

By comparison, Al Gore and Davis Guggenheim's similar but far more engaging "An Inconvenient Truth" had already made $3.5 million by its 18th day of release.

With the disaster that was Live Earth, and the BBC's announcement that it's canceling a planned day-long special on climate change, it certainly appears the public has tired of being told by disingenuous, wealthy, hypocritical movie stars that the world is going to come to an end if they don't stop driving automobiles and heating their homes during winter.

Even more troublesome to a media fixated on shoving this supposed problem down the throats of citizens is how much attention was given to this film by press outlets throughout the country including the New York Times and CBS.

Is this an indication that the press have way overplayed this issue, and that the public have grown numb to media claims of imminent doom?

Or, have back-to-back errant predictions of above average hurricane seasons led the public to a logical conclusion press members seem incapable of coming to: meteorologists can't predict weather a week from today; why should anybody believe they can forecast events decades and centuries into the future?

Regardless of the answer, it seems that two years after Katrina hit New Orleans, without a follow-up occurrence of that natural disaster, America has lost its appetite for the global warming alarmism being served by the press.

Now that's an inconvenient truth.

*****Update: Brian Maloney tells us that "The 11th Hour" was written by Al Franken's Air America replacement.

I don't see how they could call it a disaster! I looked at the user reviews and it had an average of 4 out 5 stars!!

That should be a DECENT movie! Those 6 "people" couldn't have been wrong!

Funny you should mention "art house". Michale Moore bragged about Fort Bragg turning out for his anti-Iraq war film. The NYT bought his BS about how well it was doing in a major Army town.

Turns out it was shown at Fayteeteville's Cameo Art House theater with a main screen of just 85 some odd seats. Some sell out there Mister Moore.

Would these be the same six people who listened to Air(head) America in it’s heyday?

You want to argue that it's simply a crummy movie?
Works for me.

No gloating, but is knowing smile allowed?

Here's a picture of one of the reviewers. Does this look like a person that would listen to Airhead America?

YIKES!!

Not even arguing that. I’m arguing that nobody thought the movie was going to make money in the first place so it’s not terribly exciting or proof of which side of the global warming battle is winning the hearts and minds of the people that a movie that opened in 4 theaters isn’t making a lot of money. There have been plenty of movies that opened in 4 theaters that wish they’d made 400 grand 18 days later, movies that open in 4 theaters aren’t expected to make a bunch of money, and 400 grand is not underperforming in that set. Bad movie, crummy movie, stupid movie doesn’t matter, given how they’re releasing it it’s not bombing.

Nope your math broke right at the beginning

I believe you about the movie business and the math but the bottom line is, virtually nobody has heard boo! about this film and nobody has gone to see it.Nor are they likely to.

Which is the case for over half of movies made, the art house movie business is actually larger by volume than the block buster business. Of course the entire art house business combines in a year to not even come close to the revenue of one block buster, but it’s out there, movies whose makers will consider themselves very fortunate if the final gross of their movie actually winds up with 7 digits before the period. As long as they pay for themselves they really aren’t bombs, in the end it’s always all about profitability, if you spend 100 grand making a movie that brings in 400 grand you had yourself a good day.

LMAO!  That's about what I expected for the 'reviewers' there   :-)  Let me guess....she's about 14 years old, hates America but doesn't know why, only because all of her "friends" do....she's a vegan but again only because her "friends" think it's cool....she's had lots of sex with any and all genders, and doesn't remember any of her partners' names, parents are heroin addicts who never married, her father whom she has only met a couple of times is a reporter for The Nation,  She goes to "Raves" for the drugs and casual encounters......yeah, that's your prime Airhead America listener demographic  :-)

Once again, my neural landscape has been assaulted by some really awful imagery here, and so I again feel the need to cleanse the thread:

There!  that should just about do it....I feel much better now and the neural pathways are pretty much cleaned of the horrible imagery    :-)

I prefer to compare them to the realm of what they are dealing with vs every movie released for the year. Compared to other ‘well known’ documentaries and other DiCaprio movies, this is a total bomb thus far. You can look at it any way you want but I guarantee the distributor & producer are very disappointed.

Sorry but $417K in 18 days is not merely some “arthouse” number, it’s a complete disaster for any film that doesn’t go straight to DVD.

... and now the DVD's will go straight into the public schools.

If the goal was to make a work of art or a movie for a specific audience, then yes the numbers don’t matter.

If the goal was to alert the populace regarding the dangers of global warming and the need to take action now, then the numbers do matter.

I believe the movie was made for the latter purpose and your point about comparing the movie to others with an artistic intent or for a specific limited audience is not relevant. The movie is a failure if the purpose was to appeal to the masses.
