Sen. Craig Reconsiders Choice to Resign

BOISE, Idaho - Sen. Larry Craig is reconsidering his decision to resign after his arrest in a Minnesota airport sex sting and may still fight for his Senate seat, his spokesman said Tuesday evening. "It's not such a foregone conclusion anymore, that the only thing he could do was resign," said Sidney Smith, Craig's spokesman in Idaho's capital.

"We're still preparing as if Senator Craig will resign Sept. 30, but the outcome of the legal case in Minnesota and the ethics investigation will have an impact on whether we're able to stay in the fight - and stay in the Senate."

Craig, a Republican who has represented Idaho in Congress for 27 years, announced Saturday that he intends to resign from the Senate on Sept. 30. But since then, he's hired a prominent lawyer to investigate the possibility of reversing his plea, his spokesman said.

Craig was a no-show Tuesday as Congress reconvened after a summer break and it wasn't clear whether he'll return at all since deciding to resign over his guilty plea in a sex sting this summer at the Minneapolis airport.

Another spokesman, Dan Whiting in Washington, said Tuesday that Craig was expected to spend the week in Idaho as the Senate votes on spending bills for veterans and other programs. Whiting did not rule out Craig's returning to Washington before the end of the month.

A telephone call Craig received last week from Sen. Arlen Specter, R-Pa., urging him to consider fighting for his seat is affecting Craig's decision to reconsider his resignation, Smith said.

“Let ye among you who is without sin, cast the first stone.”

Another reason to de-link religion and politics.

Unless this guy is related, I wouldn't waste the effort defending him. He's now reduced himself to a national laughingstock with no credibility.

I have never demanded any “pound of flesh”. In fact, I sincerely hope that Larry finds the Lord and seeks help. Frankly, you seem a little irrational - - no offense! - - in claiming that people here HAVE demanded a “pound of flesh”. To the contrary, nearly every poster merely wants the sick pervert out of the Senate as quickly as possible. That’s all. Surely you don’t consider that very reasonable request “demanding a pound of flesh”?

Do you know that is a logical fallacy? Your own stature cannot be enhanced at all hy demeaning others. So you make yourself look bad. In the profession of politics, getting elected and reelected statewide for 27 years is playing very close to the top.

After 27 years in the senate, the MSM finally got a story with legs against Craig. And so far, story is all it is. Shame on Mitch and Mitt and all the sanctimonious turncoats, especially FRs who can't wait to support Democrat attacks.

If he decides to fight this, let's return a teeny bit of loyalty he deserves.

WHY would Arlen Specter, RINO in the left wing extreme want a toe tapping senator to stay in the senate?

Seriously folks does ANYONE believe this is the first time Craig has done this “toe tapping” thing?

Craig must be out of his mind to consider this. It makes him look like a total fool. This kind of inconsistency almost looks worse than the original charges against him.

“If some Republicans now realize that they have to come up with an effective strategy for fighting back, that is good.”

Yeah, like maybe rejecting duplicity and embracing integrity?

Am in the minority but am strongly in support of the innocent Senator Craig staying and fighting for his innocence and his good name and for his job.....rather than, like Cong DeLay giving in to those who want to push him out of the Senate.

This is the first thing SEnator Specter has done that I agree with in a very long time.

Thanks, Sen. Specter.

Any man who is a man of integrity, excellent moral character, who has never in 40 plus years had any credible accusers claim the Senator has done ANYTHING like is indicated in this incident - deserves the right to FIGHT for his good name, for his innocence, and for his job!

Remember the Duke LaCross case. MOST of the nation thought they were guilty as rapists at the beginning of their ordeal.

They were NOT guilty of anything that came CLOSE to that behavior yet their lives were ruined for a year and after multipled thousands of dollars spent by their parents to prove them innocent.

Their accuser walks free.

Nifong got 1 day in jail (and debarred, thank God, but kept his government pension).

The people who have wanted Senator CRaig out of office are NOT people with the best interest of either the Republican party or the nation at heart.....

Caution others to give the Senator the benefit of the doubt, as the LaCross players were NOT given by many - at first.

I believe strongly he is totally innocent of doing anything wrong, criminal, unless going to the bathroom after a flight is criminal behavior.

That’s all I have to say tonight. Will check back later.

Get elected one and incumbency does the rest. I see no talent, I see a reckless felon without any principles. His state elects Republican senators because they want the party's policies, not because he is the most virtuous man in his state, which he transparently is not.

I do not consider that a reasonable request, at all. I consider it mob psychology achieved by deliberate and vicious propaganda. It is this kneejerk censoriousness that many deplore in fundamentalists. You would not want to be treated that way. What I know and you refuse to even entertain is that everything you think you know may be false. Now, that is supposed to be bedrock of American jurisprudence. You have no direct knowledge that he is a sick pervert, so you shouldn’t even say it.

And the problem is that once people have made such public pronouncements, it’s quite difficult to take them back. So, they tend to continue with their original *opinion* even in the face of contrary facts.

You are reckless when you call a man with a misdemenor a felon. People without any accomplishments often demean those of others. I have seen it hundreds of times. People who are more secure can see and admire the talent and accomplishments of others.. It is not a pretty sight. As O’Reilly said tonight. Those who celebrate the destruction of the Craig’s life need to look inside themselves. It is rotten there. Apparently he displayed political skills in college when he was elected student body president.

Mmm, no, I don't think so. Pretty bad, though. Apparently, Craig lacks even the most basic sense of shame.
