TAXI 'FEAR' HIKE STRIKE CABBIES: GPS TARGETS MUSLIMS By JEREMY OLSHAN Transit Reporter STREET FARE: Be prepared to walk, as some taxi drivers plan to strike for two days beginning tomorrow in an unusual ethnic dispute.September 4, 2007 -- Fear and paranoia are driving the taxi strike planned for tomorrow and Thursday, industry sources said yesterday.
The global-positioning systems being installed in all 13,000 cabs will be used to target and spy on Muslims, according to pro-strike literature being distributed by members of the New York Taxi Workers Alliance, the group behind the two-day walkout.
"This is where deep racial, ethnic and religious prejudices and biases come into play," one flier reads. "DNA samples are obtained, scrutinized and archived. Personal and family histories are scoured for evidence of ethnic and religious fervor. Clearly, surveillance technology can be a death sentence once you are in its crosshairs."

How is accurate targeting a bad thing?
Very simply solved. Add value for the drivers with the GPS system, i.e. a panic button that links to 911.

I suspect this has very little to do with terrorism and a whole lot to do with fleet owners.

They must have changed the taxi system in NYC. The last I knew taxi drivers were paying $30,000 for medallions and were independant businessmen. If ever I saw an industry that would benefit from privatization it is the NYC transportation biz. Customers seem to be at the bottom of the heap. Good thing I am not the mayor.
The cabbies with Moslem names are uniformly polite and decent drivers, contrary to the popular stereotype.
The worst drivers, in my experience, are the folks who obviously just arrived from West Africa.

Medallions are now up to $600,000 (sic!). Some are still owned by individual drivers, but most are fleet owned. The cabbies rent the car for a 12 hour shift and everything over the rental price and gas is profit. I believe rental prices are now around $150 a shift, though it could be more.
I would rate the sikhs as the best overall drivers in terms of politeness, driving skill and knowledge of NYC streets.

The west Africans shouldn’t be confused with the Haitians, who are good drivers. The only advantage the West Africans offer is that they listen to BBC news at night.

Many West Africans ARE muslims.
Because there are different philosophies of driving a cab in NYC.
There are the cruisers, who troll busy streets for fares.
The airport guys, who wait in line for an hour or more to pick up a fare into the city
The bar hoppers, who wait outside of busy nightclubs, etc.
The hotel guys, who wait in line hopping for an airport fare.
If they put in GPS, then fleet owners would be able to keep an eye on the cabbies and (my guess) eventually assign them territories in the city. This probably has nothing to do with terrorism.
The West African drivers I referred to are stereotypically areligious dirt poor grown-up street urchins.

It is the Muslims that are complaining about them apparently they feel they are the purpose they were installed so they could track Muslims/illegals
