The guy is a real jerk. What’s the big deal about letting them see you’re not stealing some high priced gadget? How does that infringe on his “rights?”
Perhaps the store has had a rash of shoplifting and they are taking proactive measures to ensure they aren’t getting ripped off? Can you blame them?
I’m with the store on this one. Call it another example of our declining society... the store has the right to protect itself from loss.
GOL DANG IT!!! MY DADDY FOUGHT THE GOLDANG RED JAPANESE SO I WOULDN’T HAVE TO SHOW MY BAG WHEN I LEAVE THE STORE!! THIS IS LIKE SOVIET GERMANY ALL OVER AGAIN!!!`
I found the detail on Ohios stop and identify law. I encourage you to read it in its entirety, but I will spell out the important part:
2921.29 (C) Nothing in this section requires a person to answer any questions beyond that persons name, address, or date of birth. Nothing in this section authorizes a law enforcement officer to arrest a person for not providing any information beyond that persons name, address, or date of birth or for refusing to describe the offense observed.
I have no problem letting the store check my receipts. I’m on their property, it’s part of their antitheft measures, like cameras in the store. I grant it’s irritating, but if it brings the prices down, I’m fine with it.
I agree with you. Nothing but a bunch of whiners on this thread. Maybe if they owned their own businesses, they'd think a little differently.
There are some people that don't like being passively accused of being a thief. Those of weaker minds will humbly submit to the forced inspection by another private citizen. People that have some backbone, pride and dignity tell them to stick it where the sun don't shine.

I kind of agree with you. The only time it irks me - regardless of the store - is if it is slow and the guy that is suppose to check for reciepts sees me come up to the cash register, watches me the entire time, and then still asks for a receipt. Hey - didn’t you just witness the transaction?
“Call it another example of our declining society...”
Exactly. I still grumble about Richard “the shoe bomber” Reid whenever I have to take my shoes off at the airport.
He ruined it for the rest of us.
Of course stores don’t want to get ripped off by shoplifters. However, most stores have hidden cameras and undercover shoppers to help prevent loss.
When you buy a high priced gadget they are usually behind lock and key and you have to ask a representative for one and purchase it at that counter. You’re not allowed to walk around the store with it in hand until you’ve purchased it.
So I’m completely on the side of this man and his story. This is still the USA and we are protected from unlawful search and seizure.
