Terri Schiavo's Family Continues Effort to Block Jack Kevorkian UF Speech

Gainesville, FL (LifeNews.com) -- The family of Terri Schiavo is continuing its efforts to block a speech by Jack Kevorkian scheduled for the middle of next month. The speech would be the first for the former assisted suicide crusader following his release from prison for killing a disabled man and showing the death on national television.

Kevorkian would speak to students at the University of Florida on October 11 and receive $50,000 for the talk, as long as his parole officers approve the trip.

The family of Terri Schiavo has been leading an effort to stop the speech by gathering petitions from concerned citizens so Kevorkian doesn't get a platform in their home state.

They don't want the former pathologist telling students that people with disabilities should be killed, like their sister, rather than receiving appropriate medical treatment or rehabilitative care.

Bobby Schindler, Terri's brother, told LifeNews.com, "We have collected thousands of petitions (and they are still coming in) to deliver to the Office of the President of the University of Florida."

"We're demanding the University rescind its offer to pay $50,000 for Kevorkian to address the students," he added.

"Despite the ongoing message of death spreading through our society and those, like Jack Kevorkian, who attempt to justify killing the most vulnerable among us, we are committed to fight against this death-obsessed culture and spread Terri's legacy of life, hope and love," Schindler explained.

He said there is still time for pro-life people and others worried about Kevorkian's pro-assisted suicide message to sign a petition asking the University of Florida to cancel the speech.

The petition can be found at the Terri Schindler Schiavo Foundation web site.

If Dr. Death is healthy enough to travel, he's healthy enough for prison.

It is his right to free speech and maybe a lot of people would learn something..it might open their eyes and get them to deal with the realities of death and dying and at the same time deal with the spiritual and moral and ethical dillemas we all face as technology goes further.

It should be an open discussion. Young people are sandbagged when they have no one to discuss things with when they hear someone like him.

There IS NO blanket "right" to free speech, there is a right against the government infringing your free speech. And this is about him being paid a lot of money to tell people the "joys" of killing people.

NOBODY needs to hear this message of death.

Out of Kevorkian’s more than 130 victims, a minority had terminal illnesses; most were people with disabilities who were not terminally ill. According to a review of Kevorkian’s victims by the Detroit Free Press in 1997, 60% did not have terminal conditions.

You are correct in saying that Dr. Kevorkian has a right to free speech. What he has no "right" to, is $50,000 out of the treasury of a public institution.

This is not a question of censorship. It is a question of sponsorship.

It would be a pretty fair show if they would take that $50,000 and split it five ways: $10,000 apiece for Kevorkian and Michael Schiavo on the pro-killing side; #10,000 apiece for Bobby Schindler and Fr. Frank Pavone on the anti-killing side; and the fifth portion to go to the moderator of the discussion, selected, shall we say, by the University of Florida Students with Disabilities Association.

That's sounds educational: a real discussion-starter. But $50,000 for the convicted murderer Kevorkian? No way. I'm signing that petition.

He served his time let him talk.

NO HE DIDN'T. He was released early because his doctors claimed he was dying. Someone who is dying IS NOT healthy enough to travel from Michigan to Florida to give a speech.

Well, in Dr. Death’s case, the jury felt differently.

And I guess the judge felt differently and let him go. He is now free to do what he wants and if someone is willing to pay him 50 grand to make a speech who are we to stop him. I have no plans on going to listen to him but I wont tell someone else they shouldn’t.
