MIAMI (AP) - Warships from Canada and more than a dozen other countries joined the U.S. navy for ongoing manoeuvres Sunday near the Panama Canal in an exercise being billed as one of the largest multinational military training events of the year.

More than 30 ships began the exercises Wednesday in the waters near the canal, to practise defending the economically and strategically crucial waterway.

The exercise is scheduled to continue through Friday in the Caribbean and Pacific approaches to the canal.

Thousands of ships pass through the Panama Canal every year, shuttling more than 200 million tons of exports and imports that are vital to the region's economies, according to the Miami-based U.S. Southern Command, which is sponsoring the exercise.

A dozen Latin American and Caribbean countries were participating, as were Canada, France, the Netherlands and the United States.

Warships from Canada

Both of them?

And yes, I use both to mean 2. Last list I saw showed two destroyers in the Atlantic fleet. The Canadians also have one functioning submarine at the moment. Then there is the west coast destroyer, and a handful of frigates on each coast.

This is a yearly practice that has be going on for years and years. I went in 1972 and had a great time. The South Americans treated us great, especially Chileans. Training with SA is the purpose and goodwill.

You appear to have forgotten about the dozen Halifax frigates and the supply vessels, but that’s not surprising, as you appear capable only of denigration and belittlement of your one true friend on this earth.

Why do you insist on trying to besmirch the contribution of Canada to the security and freedom of our hemisphere?

Why do you constantly try to drive a wedge between our cultures?

As the Peace Arch so clearly announces to any who read it, we are “Children of a Common Mother”.

Or is it that you think that because your nation is larger, bullying is fair play?

It’s bad enough that we up here have to tolerate the morons on the left side of the political spectrum. Thoughtless posts like the one I am responding to make it that much more difficult to mend the fabric torn by years of leftism here AND THERE!

Up here we FINALLY have a genuinely close to conservative Federal gov’t. Major changes have already occurred, and more are on the way. New planes, helos, tanks, and this in the FIRST year!

Let’s try to work together for the furthering of conservative values rather than SNIPING at admitted weaknesses and shortcomings of each other, OK?

Don, he was just trying to wind us up, it appears to have worked on you. You can’t deny our Navy is in a pitiful state today compared to what it once was. It hurts me painfully, but we will have our pride restored one day.

I see they don’t teach manners in Canada any more. Or reading comprehension either, for that matter, What part of “NO personal attacks” can you not understand?

And, of course, you weren’t able to post anything to refute my post. How many functioning submarines do you think Canada has? How many Functioning destroyers do you think Canada has on the east coast? on the west coast?

Buying the used British submarines rather than new German, Swedish, or French boats was a horrible idea, and your name calling won’t make it any better.

Sooner I hope, rather than later, but modern warships aren't built overnight.

Personally I think we'd all do better as one nation. (Minus Quebec and without all the socialism of course)

I didn't think Canada had a real Navy. I was surprised to see the headline, "Warships from Canada." It is a sacrifice, when you think about it. They are probably putting all their assets into this maneuver. :0

While the info I gave was dated (except as to the subs) I believe it was generally accurate. That’s probably why the Canadian guy was so upset - he couldn’t refute it. Well that, and perhaps some alcohol.
