(PEORIA) - Caterpillar Inc. announced Tuesday it will begin making small and medium-sized diesel engines in China, including some from a new manufacturing facility it plans to build there.

The company said the engines will be made at facilities in Wuxi in the Jiangsu province, according to a memorandum of understanding reached with the Wuxi National High-Tech Industrial Development Zone.

It's part of a multi-year investment to develop and manufacture the engines, which will be sold under the Caterpillar and Perkins brands.

"This is about increasing our global capacity to meet customer demand," said spokesman Rusty Dunn. "It's a significant symbol of Caterpillar's commitment to China and the region."......

“Caterpillar’s commitment to China”? How about their “commitment” to the workers in the United States? Time to sell their stock.

Caterpillar makes more than enough money: they’re stinking rich. The least they could do is learn how to say “thank you” to the country that made them so wealthy in the first place.

I’m betting that CAT will manufacture in China...ONLY for China, with few if any exports. The growth of construction around the country would easily take care of sales and they will make a ton of money on this investment over the next twenty years. The quality of the stuff they build...will be pretty negative in the beginning....but maybe in ten years...they might actually be capable of making a standard CAT. We used to say Honda cars were a joke...but that was 30 years ago.

You got that right. Make the engines in China, ship them to Mexico and have them tranported up the nifty NAFTA super highway, instead of making them in the US and supporting the homeland economy. When a few fat cats need to make that six-zero salary, commitment to China is the slogan for today.

And this will help their stockholders bottom line how again? Caterpillar, nor any other company, owe allegiance to a nation. Their allegiance, being a business, is to their stockholders.

If the product is of the same quality and can be made more cheaply overseas they should be applauded for their business decision. That's how businesses work..

So I take it you're not a private company doing what it takes to open new markets then. Hell, why don't we just start nationalizing certain corporations while we're at it? I'm serious!! Just jump both feet into socialism and forgo even attempting to appear capitalistic.
