In Book, Bush Peeks Ahead to His Legacy

By JIM RUTENBERG

WASHINGTON, Aug. 31 — When President Bush is asked what he plans to do when he leaves office, he often replies curtly: “I don’t have that much time to think beyond my presidency” or “I’m going to sprint to the finish.”

But in an interview with a book author in the Oval Office one day last December, he daydreamed about the next phase of his life, when his time will be his own.

First, Mr. Bush said, “I’ll give some speeches, just to replenish the ol’ coffers.” With assets that have been estimated as high as nearly $21 million, Mr. Bush added, “I don’t know what my dad gets — it’s more than 50-75” thousand dollars a speech, and “Clinton’s making a lot of money.”

Then he said, “We’ll have a nice place in Dallas,” where he will be running what he called “a fantastic Freedom Institute” promoting democracy around the world. But he added, “I can just envision getting in the car, getting bored, going down to the ranch.”

For now, though, Mr. Bush told the author, Robert Draper, in a later session, “I’m playing for October-November.” That is when he hopes the Iraq troop increase will finally show enough results to help him achieve the central goal of his remaining time in office: “To get us in a position where the presidential candidates will be comfortable about sustaining a presence,” and, he said later, “stay longer.”

But fully aware of his standing in opinion polls, Mr. Bush said his top commander in Iraq, Gen. David H. Petraeus, would

I’m afraid his legacy will be written in Spanish.

>>>>>The transcripts and the book show Mr. Bush as being keenly interested in what history will say about his term despite his frequent comments to the contrary ...

One eye on his legacy. So contrary to what the BushBots are spouting off, Dubya is human after all.

In response to Mr. Draper’s observance that Mr. Bush had nobody’s “shoulder to cry on,” the president said: “Of course I do, I’ve got God’s shoulder to cry on, and I cry a lot.” In what Mr. Draper interpreted as a reference to war casualties, Mr. Bush added, “I’ll bet I’ve shed more tears than you can count as president.”

I thought that paragraph was very telling.

Good policy is taking every single thing the Slimes prints with a big grain of salt. And considering the context or lack thereof they provide.

Such as the omission of the little fact about the other 16 or 17 UN resolutions that Saddam ignored over the years. No word about that, nosiree.

.., he often replies curtly..

You can feel the bias...they can't help themselves.

It's who they are..
it's what they do....

"So contrary to what the BushBots are spouting off, Dubya is human after all"

Pretty easy to answer an argument one only pretends others are making.

Baby Bush’s legacy is Mexico del Norte.

Robert Draper's publisher, Simon & Schuster, says about him, "Robert Draper has been a national correspondent for GQ magazine for the past decade, and prior to that was senior editor at Texas Monthly." link

As far as I know, Texas Monthly is an extremely liberal magaszine and has been for a long time.

Mr. Bush's legacy will be the subjugation of the American people to the will of the Mexican oligarchy.

Hope he got paid well for the treason.

Yeah, if that article is true, then it makes it look like Bush is concerned primarily with money and raising more money, and that $21 million isn't enough for him. The comment about speeches and his dad and Clinton make it sound like he's eager to pimp himself out, and I don't see that happening - it has to be taken out of context.

I agree with the others though, his legacy will be tied to Mexico.
