Terrorist Bomber Breaks Out Of Jail (Indonesia)
Monday September 24, 2007
An Islamist terrorist serving 20 years for a fatal bomb attack on a karaoke bar has broken out of jail in Indonesia. Police try to track down fugitive Jasmin bin Kasau apparently used a rope to climb the walls as inmates were performing communal evening Ramadan prayers in Guning Sari prison on Sulawesi island.
A police spokesman said "negligence" by prison guards was suspected in the breakout. "We have searched his parents' and relatives' houses, but so far we have no clue," he said. Prison officials, including its security chief, have been questioned by police over the escape.
Bin Kasau masterminded a bomb attack on a bar in the Sulawesi district of Palopo that killed four people in January 2004. It followed a series of deadly battles between Muslim and Christian gangs that killed at least 1,000 people in 2000 and 2001. Indonesia has suffered a spate of bomb attacks in recent years, notably the 2002 Bali bombings which killed 202 people. Most of the attacks have been blamed on Islamic radicals from the Jemaah Islamiah militant network.
Indonesia is the world's fourth most populous country, and about 85% of its people are Muslims. While the vast majority are relatively moderate, a militant minority has become increasingly violent in recent years.
