Bomb dismantled under Santee bridge (California)
September 24, 2007

SANTEE – Sheriff's bomb-arson investigators dismantled an explosive device Monday morning that was found under a bridge by construction workers putting in landscaping. The device was discovered about 8 a.m. under the bridge on Olive Lane just north of Prospect Avenue.

Abomb-arson investigator wearing protective gear dismantled the device. Sgt. E.J. Dayrit said the device wasn't strong enough to destroy the bridge but could have hurt someone. He declined to describe the device because he said he didn't want others to duplicate it. Traffic was blocked for a couple of hours on Olive between Prospect and Via Zapador.

German plot links may reach Syria, Europe
Mon 24 Sep 2007

The network of three suspects arrested last month in an al Qaeda-linked bomb plot in Germany may have extended to Syria and other countries in Europe, the German interior minister said on Monday.

"They worked in a very conspirative and high(ly) professional conspirative manner," Interior Minister Wolfgang Schaeuble told reporters as he met U.S. Homeland Security Secretary Michael Chertoff in Washington. German police earlier this month arrested the three men, said to have trained at militant camps in Pakistan, on suspicion of plotting large bomb attacks on U.S. installations in Germany. U.S. electronic surveillance played a key role in disrupting the plot, authorities have said.

The suspects had an international network that ranged to "not only Pakistan (but also) Syria, and even there are links maybe to other European countries," Schaeuble said. There were also possible additional contacts in Germany but authorities lacked sufficient evidence to prosecute, he said.

Terrorist Bomber Breaks Out Of Jail (Indonesia)
Monday September 24, 2007

An Islamist terrorist serving 20 years for a fatal bomb attack on a karaoke bar has broken out of jail in Indonesia. Police try to track down fugitive Jasmin bin Kasau apparently used a rope to climb the walls as inmates were performing communal evening Ramadan prayers in Guning Sari prison on Sulawesi island.

A police spokesman said "negligence" by prison guards was suspected in the breakout. "We have searched his parents' and relatives' houses, but so far we have no clue," he said. Prison officials, including its security chief, have been questioned by police over the escape.

Bin Kasau masterminded a bomb attack on a bar in the Sulawesi district of Palopo that killed four people in January 2004. It followed a series of deadly battles between Muslim and Christian gangs that killed at least 1,000 people in 2000 and 2001. Indonesia has suffered a spate of bomb attacks in recent years, notably the 2002 Bali bombings which killed 202 people. Most of the attacks have been blamed on Islamic radicals from the Jemaah Islamiah militant network.

Indonesia is the world's fourth most populous country, and about 85% of its people are Muslims. While the vast majority are relatively moderate, a militant minority has become increasingly violent in recent years.

Female suicide bombers may carry out countrywide attacks, indicates intelligence reports (Pakistan)
9/24/07

Law enforcement agencies have forwarded intelligence reports to the senior government officials regarding suicide attacks expected to be carried out by women bombers across the country, Interior Ministry sources told Daily Times on September 23.

“There are chances that male and female former students of Jamia Hafsa, Jamia Fareedia and Lal Masjid that managed to escape from ‘Operation Silence’ could carry out suicide attacks across the country,” the intelligence agencies’ reports said, according to sources. The report also suspected involvement of students from these madrassas (seminaries) in the suicide bombing on July 17 in Islamabad.

The police seniors across the country immediately issued instructions to keep a close eye on suspicious women wearing shuttlecock burqas and/or youngsters roaming near important installations, especially foreign ones, as well as important personalities, law enforcement personnel and important public and business places, sources said. Intelligence agencies said in the report that the Kernal Sher Khan Shaheed Stadium, at Khyber Road, in Peshawar, would be the likely target of such attacks, since there was a large number of rickshaws and public transport vehicles parked there most of the time.

Taliban threatens tailors in NWFP
(9/23/07

Local Taliban in Kohat in North West Frontier Province (NWFP) have warned tailors to strictly observe religious code while sewing clothes for men and women and keep their shops shut during taraveeh (prayer) time.

In a letter sent to tailors, the Taliban claiming to be from the Jamaat-i-Islami asked them not to play music during night and threatened to blow up the shops of those not following the orders.

OT oddity:
Earlier today I was puttering in the kitchen while Ahmadinejad was on the TV "performing" his on stage rant. When he was done I was going outside to do some chores. Just as he finished I looked at the outside thermometer to check the temperature and it was 66.6. How ironically apropos, I thought.

“Troops Kill Five, Nab 15 in Raids Around Iraq”
American Forces Press Service

WASHINGTON, Sept. 24, 2007 – Iraqi and coalition forces killed five insurgents, detained 15 suspects and destroyed a weapons cache in Iraq over the past three days, military officials said.

During operations east of Tikrit today, coalition and Iraqi forces targeted senior al Qaeda leaders and foreign terrorist facilitators. At the target area, the combined force discovered three armed insurgents in a courtyard.

After the insurgents failed to disarm, combined forces engaged them, killing three. The slain insurgents are believed to be tied to a Baghdad-based network responsible for car-bombing attacks and facilitating the movement of foreign terrorists into the Tigris River Valley, military officials said. During the operation, troops discovered several weapons caches, ammunition and military-style uniforms. An explosives team safely destroyed the weapons on site.

Northeast of Mosul today, coalition forces targeted associates of an al Qaeda emir who operates in northwestern Iraq. Troops captured five suspected terrorists, including one suspect who allegedly is responsible for arranging vehicles, distributing wages and supplying false documentation for al Qaeda members, military officials said. He and another suspect are believed to be brothers of the emir.

Two coalition force operations in Baghdad and the northern belt of the Iraqi capital targeted key al Qaeda operatives today. Troops detained one suspected terrorist in Baghdad and nabbed another west of Tarmiyah.

“Terrorists who commit murderous acts against the people of Iraq have no place in this country’s future,” said Army Maj. Winfield Danielson, a Multinational Force Iraq spokesman. “We will remain on the offensive and root them out of their hiding places.”

In eastern Baghdad today, coalition forces arrested a kidnapper and detained four other suspects. Military officials said the detainees are part of a “special groups” cell supported by Iran and were involved in kidnapping operations and other crimes against Iraqi citizens and security forces. As coalition forces raided the targeted site, suspects engaged the troops with small arms and improvised explosive devices, including at least one explosively formed penetrator, a shaped charge designed to pierce armor. The ground forces retaliated and killed one individual, military officials said.

Troops detained three suspects wanted for insurgent activities during a Sept. 22 raid south of Hawr Rajab. During the operation, the paratroopers, who are attached to 2nd Brigade Combat Team, 3rd Infantry Division, nabbed three individuals on their target list. The detainees are suspected of planting and detonating improvised explosive devices, military officials said.

Also that day in Ninewah province, Iraqi security forces prevented an attempted hijacking by terrorists targeting two buses filled with passengers. When Iraqi police in Mosul received initial reports that a bus hijacking was in progress, they informed 2nd Brigade, 2nd Iraqi Army Division. A company of Iraqi army soldiers responded and engaged the hijackers, killing one and injuring another. The remaining individuals fled while Iraqi soldiers recovered the buses. The passengers and buses were taken to a nearby combat outpost. No passengers were reported injured.

“The swift coordination and response by Iraqi security forces prevented the kidnapping of these passengers,” said Army Col. Stephen Twitty, commander of 4th Brigade Combat Team, 1st Cavalry Division. “Their actions ensured the safety and security of these innocent civilians.”

Coalition Forces Seize Score of Insurgents, Find Weapons in Afghanistan

American Forces Press Service

WASHINGTON, Sept. 24, 2007 – Afghan and coalition forces detained 20 insurgents and discovered a weapons cache in Afghanistan over the past two days, military officials said.

Afghan and coalition forces detained 11 suspected militants today in the Gelan district of Ghazni province, military officials said. At the target site, troops detained the suspected militants and discovered small arms, ammunition vests and a machine gun.

Yesterday, combined forces nabbed nine militants in the Andar district of Ghanzi province, military officials said.

“Our multinational partnership is making significant strides in disrupting violent extremist influence in the region,” said Army Maj. Chris Belcher, a Combined Joint Task Force 82 spokesman. “Afghan and coalition forces continue to strike major blows against terrorist networks so ordinary citizens may one day live in peace.”

The detained militants are being held for further questioning. Military officials said that some damage occurred to buildings in these operations.

DOVER, Del. (AP) - Police arrested an 18-year-old man in the shooting of two students at Delaware State University, authorities said Monday. As they led him into a courthouse, he told reporters: “I’m sorry.”

Loyer D. Braden, arrested about 3 a.m. in his dorm room, was charged with attempted murder, assault and reckless endangerment, as well as a gun charge, according to court documents.

A justice of the peace set bail for the East Orange, N.J., teenager at $75,000 and ordered him to stay away from the victims and Delaware State. Braden is a freshman at Delaware State, according to a man at Braden’s home in East Orange who identified himself only as a family member.

University offficials, who had assured the campus community over the weekend that the gunman was not on campus, could not explain how or when Braden returned to his dorm room.
