After being caught trying to smuggle drugs into Australia the Pong Su was sunk by two 2000-pound (900 kg) laser-guided bombs dropped from an RAAF F-111 aircraft. The deliberate destruction of the freighter was said to deliver a strong message to international drug smuggling rings that the Australian Federal Government would take all measures necessary to stop illegal drug importation.
That certainly was a very strong message.
Ooops, two of our big laser-guided bombs have gone missing somewhere near a North Korean drug ship...maybe they can help us find them before they hurt someone...
God Bless the Aussies.
It’s time we learn from our friends! Great video!
“Aardvarks are still flying? Kewl. Get some, aardvarks!”
Yeah, the Aussies bought some way back when, and have bought more since they went outta business with the USAF. They’ve also upgraded them and fixed some of the basic problems the -111 had in the first place. Had we done the same work, they’d still be flying here, probably. The Aussies call the -111 the “Pig” and the patch their pilots wear says “Pigs Must Fly”
Aussies kick ass. One of the few western countries that hasn’t been sissified. Good for them!
Go Aussies!
Are the allies coming onto the same page or are the allies coming onto the same page?
I thought it nothing but a hazard to not repeat myself.
I know the world is going to attempt to blame America and the Aussies. But again, A Salute To The Aussies, from America.
If only the US govt had that kind of guts.
Looks like that might have done the job. Damage Control’s gonna have a tough time with that one.
Operation El Dorado Canyon
On April 5, 1986, a bomb exploded in a discotheque in Berlin frequented by United States service personnel. Of the 200 injured, 63 were American soldiers; one soldier and one civilian were killed.
On the late evening of 15 April and early morning of 16 April 1986, under the code name El Dorado Canyon, the United States launched a series of military air strikes against ground targets inside Libya. The timing of the attack was such that while some of the strike aircraft were still in the air, President Reagan was able to address the US public and much of the world. He emphasized that this action was a matter of US self defense against Libyas state-sponsored terrorism. In part, he stated, "Self defense is not only our right, it is our duty. It is the purpose behind the mission...a mission fully consistent with Article 51 of the U.N. Charter."
The use of force was specifically prompted by what the President claimed was "irrefutable proof" that Libya had directed the terrorist bombing of a West Berlin discotheque nine days earlier which had killed one American and injured 200 others. The impetus for the Presidents decision to authorize the raid was the American intelligence interception of a message from Gadaffi ordering an attack on Americans "to cause maximum and indiscriminate casualties." Another communications source, an intercepted Libyan message outlined the attack being planned in West Berlin.
The raid was designed to hit directly at the heart of Gaddafis ability to export terrorism with the belief that such a preemptive strike would provide him "incentives and reasons to alter his criminal behavior." The final targets of the raid were selected at the National Security Council level "within the circle of the Presidents advisors." Ultimately, five targets were endorsed by the JCS and Secretary of Defense and approved by President Reagan:

We DID the work to upgrade our F-111s. It was called Pacer Strike for the F-111Fs and AMP for the EF-111s. Turned MX nightmare pieces of junk into very reliable jets - operating cost/hour just slightly higher than an F-15E.
The government could have kept all the EF-111s and a squadron of F-111Fs flying for the same cost as the 20 EA-6Bs - but the Navy was willing, and the USAF wasn’t.
One of the worst deals in the military - getting rid of the EF-111s and F-111Fs and taking 20 Prowlers instead.
I’m not criticizing but... I assume they evacuated the ship before they sunk it? Also, would they not have been better off confiscating the ship as contraband? It was probably in sh!t shape though. It made a hell of a video statement. Still, it seems like the same effect could have been made by opening the seacocks.
After reading the RAID ON QUADAFFI(sp) I thought they were a poor conglomeration of airplane.
That's my new tagline. I've had the old one for a long time, and it's so good I hate to lose it. At least both quotes are from the greatest president I've ever seen (though I didn't know it at the time), Ronald Reagan.
"Liberals read Karl Marx. Conservatives UNDERSTAND Karl Marx."
There were actually two US servicemen killed in the La Belle bombing.
The new one is better.
