Fred Thompson plans to run, officially (As Others See His Strategy)
LA Times ^ | 31 August 2007 | Joe Mathews

...In recent speeches, Thompson has also indicated a distaste for traditional position papers and policy stances. "To me there are a lot of issues," he said dismissively to the Midwest Republican Leadership Conference on Saturday in Indianapolis. "Goodness knows we are not deprived of issues or solutions that people have."

Instead, he has called for a focus on what he terms "first principles." His speeches have identified three: a tough stance on national security, the will to control federal spending, and a limited role for the federal government.

As he tested the waters in recent months, Thompson largely avoided sustained questioning from the news media, and he attended few traditional political events. Instead, he has relied on commentaries and videos released online to communicate with voters. A webcast announcement fits that pattern.

"He's going to hope his record won't be scrutinized," said Martin Kaplan, director of USC's Norman Lear Center, a multidisciplinary research center that focuses on the intersection of entertainment, commerce and society. Kaplan was also an official with Democrat Walter F. Mondale's 1984 presidential campaign.

"He won't have to take questions from the press, and he can run solely on his image," Kaplan said of Thompson.

The Thompson campaign said that the kickoff would be followed by appearances in Des Moines and Council Bluffs, Iowa, and that Thompson planned to visit New Hampshire on Sept. 8. The following week, he is scheduled to stop in South Carolina and Florida. His announcement tour ends Sept. 15 in his hometown of Lawrenceburg, Tenn...

I note that when he was at the Iowa State Fair he asked for and received a golf cart. No other candidate--Republican or Democrat--made such a request.

I think most people know about the golf cart thing, that is old news.

A few months ago, I kind of liked him as a candidate. Now his “testing the waters” is becoming tedious and excessively coy.

First principles are all well and good. But not as a substitute for well thought out positions on relevant issues. Winging it because you are too lazy to think - not good.

I’m willing to reassess my attitude toward him, but he’ll have to do better to win me back.

(Just for the record, I’m not too keen on any of front runners. But I’m not willing to go from frying pan to fire.)

The Republican Party, for over 100 years has stood for these four pillars.

Smaller Government
Lower Taxes
Individual Rights
Constitutional Freedom

You can join us if you also believe in these things but we should have no outreach program to diversify them.

Thompson shepherded few major bills during his eight years as a senator.....

He won't have to take questions from the press, and he can run solely on his image,"....

And this differs from Hillary, how?

You’re paying too much attention then. Get another hobby.

He, like most of us are sick of politicians and two year election cycles. He does what he says he is going to do. Being critical of him for the press massive coverage of politicians is silly.

FDR would have — and so would have Eisenhower.

Hey, why not attend one of the National House Parties for Fred...

You might be re-vitqalized!

Fred has been writing a lot of articles stating his opinions about variety of issues.

Who is too lazy?

Asking for a golf cart is not a make or break issue. Btw, I heard Fred has a personal trainer and works out daily. You can see he’s lost weight. In that regard, I’d call Fred a very serious candidate.

Besides, Fred Thompson is one of us. A conservative who is pro-defense, pro-limited govt, pro-federalism, pro-tax reform, pro-gun, pro-life and anti-amnesty.

The Thompson campaign is going to be a train wreck... indecisive... lacking a reason to exist...

If Fred secures the nomination it’s 2006 all over again. The man has no passion for the job.

Hey, covered more ground with golf cart than hoofin' it.

Obama was with his kids - riding on the midway... How many serious voters hang out there?
Maybe if he had used an SUV he would have fitted in better with some peoples image of Republicans.

Spoken like a person who made this brilliant previous post"

If Rudy gets the nomination, he carries 40+ states and a lot of conservative Republicans to victory in the House and Senate

Credibility is not your long suit.

Did you read that in an op-ed piece?

I don’t see where people come up with laziness and indecisive lines. If you’re running for president, and getting 20% of the primary vote in polls, then you can’t be that lazy.

Also, presidents used to announce their presidencies the year of the election. Fred is not following the herd, he’s sticking to his own schedule.

Have you ever been to the Iowa State fair on a hot, muggy summer afternoon? A golf cart sounds like a good idea, especially if he was covering a lot of ground on a short schedule.

If the MSM wasn't bored with their demonrat candidates and bored with Republican candidates and wasn't trying to do everything they can to keep potential voters from paying attention to the absolute disaster that is the demonrat controlled congress, no one would be paying attention to FDT. After the last five or six months of scrutinizing everyone else, FDT is the only game left in town. And, apparently, he worries a lot of people. What will we be saying after another year of this?

I hope you are right; however, he has an indolent non-Hodgkins Lymphoma (NHL). He already has received radiation and systemic chemotherapy for this disorder. His oncologist indicates he has an "indolent" form of the disorder and is unlikely to suffer an exacerbation.

An actual, well done professional discussion of NHL can be found: HERE.

A key paragraph is as follows:

"...Broadly speaking, nodular/follicular forms of NHL tend to have an indolent, but ultimately fatal course. Usually the disease is widespread throughout the body and involves the bone marrow early in the course of the disease. Patients may live 10 years or more, intermittently requiring easily tolerated therapies. The diffuse forms tend to be much more aggressive but hold the possibility of cure, especially when the spread is limited.1 Most cases of NHL are diffuse, although the increases have been greater for the nodular form...

I surely hope it is true that his physical condition and weight loss are due to his "working out;" however, the earliest symptoms of an exacerbation of NHL are weight loss and physical/psychological fatigue.

What needs to be avoided is a Paul Tsongas situation. About this time in 1991, Senator Tsongas was riding high in the polls and did win New Hampshire. Bill Clinton came in second and claimed he was the "come back kid" after the Jennifer Flowers story.

Before the primaries Senator Tsongas (he was no longer in office) and his physician had a press conference. Tsongas had received total body radiation and a bone marrow transplant. Both he and his physician claimed success. Tsongas lost to President Clinton and had a fatal exacerbation of NHL before the next election. He died very shortly after that.

Fred Thompson is not the first cancer victim to run for the Presidency; however, if elected, he will be the first elected with an active malignancy. Noted, is that both Giuliani (prostate cancer) and McCain (malignant melanoma of the face) are also cancer victims.

O wow, I missed that.

There is no way Julie-Annie is carrying more than 20 states, and conservative republicans wouldnt follow his coatails into the majority again anyway. An Airbus couldn’t hold all the baggage he carries.
