At the very beginning of today's press conference, it was disclosed that Tony Snow would be stepping down as Press Secretary on September 14th, being replaced by longtime deputy press secretary Dana Perino. When Tony did start fielding questions, there was one interchange that showed the class of Tony Snow, and why he will be missed very much at the White House.
It was a very interesting political day. Not only did Snow announce, but Virginia Senator John Warner announced he would not seek re-election, and the rumors grew that disgraced Idaho Senator Larry Craig would announce his immediate resignation tomorrow.
What now will Tony do? He responded to health questions by saying he received his last scheduled chemo treatment about two weeks ago, the cancer is in check, and he feels good. He hinted that a lecture circuit was in the offing, as is a book or two, maybe some radio and TV. But as Fred Barnes has proposed, and we continue to encourage from afar, Tony needs to go ahead and make a few speeches, but he needs to seriously consider a run for Warner's seat in the Senate.

I saw a snippet of the press conference on the news. President Bush made a statement, directed to the White House press corp arrayed in from of him, along the lines of “It has been a joy watching him spar with you,” and then continued on. They showed the front row, which was three women, one of whom was Helen Thomas. They were all stone-faced or worse. Much worse, in the case of Helen.

I hope the Lord restores him fully to excellent health.
I hope he gets rest and has time with his family...
..but I disagree with Hewitt that Snow should run for office.
I have reasons, but suffice to say I'm against it.

I don’t think a Senator makes as much as a Press Secretary, even its more its not much more.

:-) Dana Perino is an excellent choice for WH Press Secretary and Tony will have new responsibilities which I hope would mean that we get to see/hear him often.

I think that while they disagreed with Tony’s politics (woo hoo!) that they will miss him. He handled them well.
Helen appeared to be sad to see him leave.
The stony facedness may have been as this came over vacation and the establishment press were not “cued in” (read- have someone else do their jobs for them) that this was coming.

I disagree with the notion that Tony Snow should run for Senator of Virginia for 2 reasons:
1. His health. Political campaigns are very taxing, and at this moment in Mr Snow’s life, he doesn’t need anything like that. He needs to get well. I’m not a medical person in any way, so when I say that I worry the stress of the Press Secretary’s job contributed to the recurrence of his cancer, I’m speaking entirely as a lay person with not a lick of knowledge on the subject. Nonetheless, it’s been in the back of my mind.
2. Tony Snow is from Cincinnati. He’s a graduate of Princeton High School, and he is considered one of us. The area has great affection for him, and he regularly pops up on radio interviews, appearances, etc. In short, if Snow is going to run for the Senate, he should do it here. Ohio is as critical as Virginia, if not more so, and I don’t think he could lose in this state.

My instinct tells me Snow is very sick, and may not be with us long.
To: xzins
I agree with point 2.
Point 1- He has been very forthcoming in telling us that he is getting better and that he’s had his last chemo (yay). He’s been working out and he also told us that the doctors are happy that the cancer has been shrinking.
godramB made a good point that money is an issue.
