Polish general among candidates for NATO chief
Friday, August 31. 2007
General Franciszek Gagor, head of the Polish military headquarters, is one of three candidates for the position of Chief of NATO Military Committee.
The Polish general will compete against two other chiefs of military headquarters: Italian admiral Giampaolo Di Paola and Spanish general Felix Sanz Roldan.
A meeting of heads of national military headquarters is scheduled in Canada for September, by which time a full list of candidates has to be drawn up.
A vote by secret ballot to select the new chief will take place in Brussels in November.
The decision will not be solely made by the military, as diplomats are also involved in the negotiation process.
No, that’s not him ;-)
That’d make Putin happy. /s
I admire the freedom-loving spirit of the Polish people. They are a proud and long-suffering people who have kept their cultural identity even in the face of national socialism and communism.
But let’s shoot straight here...the past performance of their military does not inspire confidence. This would be like putting a French general in charge of NATO, if France were a member.
That, and his hat looks goofy.
Just on principal, I’d like to see this happen because it would be such a thumb in Putin’s eye.
Oh, wouldn’t that be great!?!? How exciting.
Yep, they do great when they’re part of an allied force. Not so good by themselves (except, like I said the 1 battle they won).
“they do great when theyre part of an allied force”
Like NATO?
They did not lead the allies in WWII, did they?
Pssst Einstein! France has been a member of NATO since the alliance was founded.
What kind of a hat would you like the Polish Armed Forces to wear? The Red Army saucer style, that nifty peaked number the Germans had in WWII, Il Duce’s flap over style or the other Fascist one with the tassles?
Your historical knowledge of Polish military achievements is is nil.
Being a non-NATO country (although half of NATO would like us to join) Australia’s opinion on this doesn’t count.
That said, I’ve heard General Gagor has a good reputation as a competent leader. Plus the Aussie Navy worked with the Poles in the Gulf and we were pretty impressed.
The downunder vote goes with Gagor.
Has the Spanish Army or the Italian Navy done any better?
If he is appointed we shall rename NATO - and the new name is - the Warsaw Treaty Organization. ;-)
