New victims claim priest abuse
Evansville Courier Press ^ | August 31, 2007 | Susan Orr

More than 10 victims have alleged sexual abuse by the late Monsignor Othmar Schroeder and reports are continuing to come in, the Catholic Diocese of Evansville's bishop said Thursday.

Bishop Gerald Gettelfinger said two more reports came in Thursday through the diocese's sexual abuse hot line. Most of the reports have been from men but some have been from women, he said.

This is the largest number of victims associated with a single priest in the diocese's history, Gettelfinger said.

Ho hum. Another pedophile priest and another bishop who covered it up. Move along citizen, nothing to see. And people wonder why church attendance is down?

Yeah, the accused doesn’t get a chance to defend himself since he is deceased. How convenient.

Precisely. I guess they will have to exhume and reanimate him so he can face his accusers.

I smell lawsuit money here.

The usual story.

The priest has been dead for TWENTY years. He had been dead for TEN years when the first allegations surfaced, so there was no coverup and no point in making a public report because there was no risk of reoffense and no punishment was possible (he is already getting his punishment if these allegations are true.)

The first publicity about the homosexual priests molesting adolescent boys (not pedophiles - those are men who molest prepubescent children) came out in the 80s. At that point, or certainly after the guy was DEAD, there was no point in the victims failing to come forward.

You'll notice that NOBODY is raising allegations about recent molestation? There's a reason for that.

I too smell a lawsuit.

My thoughts as well. I wonder on the average how many abuse accusations are filed against a priest when his death becomes public knowledge. Is it 2 per priest, 10,20? Why not go for the brass ring and file against every deceased priest in a Diocese’s records? Or better yet just file against 5 priests in each State. Sooner or later you are bound to hit a winner. Plus those out of court settlements can be rather juicy.

In the Philadelphia area, the Catholic church is advertising on the radio for anyone who was abused as a child by anyone in the church to call for counseling. It’s as much of an invitation to enrich yourself through the church as anything I’ve ever heard. My husband, a devoted Catholic, is getting less and less interested in giving his weekly offering, something that he always did without fail. He’s even coming to church with me more. I’m Protestant.

This sort of thing is inherent in a system that demands celibacy. Cap a powerful force off from the outside and itw ill find another outlet - a less expected and proper one.

Sounds like a pretty good scam, doesn’t it? Wait till a priest dies, recruit a couple dozen people who will swear he molested them and cash in on the lawsuit lotto? This guy’s been dead for 20 years. Wonder why no one’s come forward before now?

So, all those homosexuals who were exposed while they were in heterosexual marriages demonstrates that homosexuality is inherent with marriage??

I don't think it has anything to do with the requirement of celibacy. If it were the celibacy issue, all those teachers (male and female) wouldn't be molesting kids -- after all, they have "an outlet." Ditto with Protestant clergy, some of whom molest. They can marry, or engage in flings...

It's deviance, pure and simple. Unfortunately, a few bad apples can make the whole cartful look bad.

BS. A specious argument at best perpetuated by the ignorant.

What's your explanation for the behavior of these protestants or public school employees since you can't use the crutch of celibacy.

And how many Protestant Churches put the abuse of the ministers right out there for everyone to see?

Also — the public schools hide innumerable amounts of pedophile teachers who have abused students.

Yes, some priests have made some mistakes — that doesn’t make all of them bad.

Yes, some ministers have made some mistakes — that doesn’t make all of them bad.

Yes, some teachers have made some mistakes — that doesn’t make all of them bad.

In other words, this isn’t just a “priest” problem.

Really it’s from ambulance chasing attorneys.

It may not be “just” a priest problem, but it was covered up for decades by the Church’s leadership. I know it was. I can’t begin to tell you what else was covered up.

“My thoughts as well. I wonder on the average how many abuse accusations are filed against a priest when his death becomes public knowledge.”

How do we know ALL the reports came in after his death?

These hotlines aren’t publicized - when someone calls in, the diocese isn’t announcing who has been accused, or how many calls have been received.

so...what people are suggesting is that these callers are in cahoots with each other. That they know each other and are making it up?

Sadly...I suspect that isn’t the case.

I’m going to guess some people called long ago...some recently, and some will continue to call.

Some of these people may know each other - but they may not as well.

When you have multiple reports from people who don’t know each other, and who are not aware of the reports others have made...that is damning evidence.

My explanation is that the sexual sins of famous Protestant divines have been primarily normal. You weren’t paying attention when I brought in the steam simile: cap it off and it will come out somewhere other than where it’s supposed to.

Celibacy is unscriptural and therefore ungodly.
