Had more than 50% been in favor, they would have said "a majority of district parents were in favor of showing the film..."

Somehow, I suspect this means that more people were opposed to the film being shown than were in favor.It's New Jersey. I believe the 50% statistic. We homeschool here in NJ, and even half the homeschool families lean to the Far Left, including some of the "Christian" homeschoolers.
