US President George W. Bush has apologised to the people of Sydney for the widespread inconvenience the APEC summit security lockdown will cause.
Speaking to Sky News, Mr Bush said he was not aware of how the city would be affected, but he was sorry if he was putting people out.
"I have a lot on my mind," he said, adding that it was the first he had heard of the planned security crackdown that will see much of the northern part of the city fenced off as well as expanded police powers to search people and seize banned items.
"I apologise to the extent that I incovenience people," he said.
"I hope people understand why it's done and I hope it doesn't disrupt their lives too much."
The APEC summit, in which 20 world leaders will join Prime Minister John Howard in Sydney to discuss regional trade and security issues, is said to be costing around $300 million to stage, including about $170 million for security.
Special laws have been passed granting beefed up powers to police to ensure the leaders are protected. Roads and train stations will be closed and a 2.8-metre fence will be built sealing off the Opera House, Government House, part of the Royal Botanical Gardens and city streets.
A public holiday has been declared to ease the impact on Sydneysiders.

Yeah, I’ve never noticed any apologies from leftist scumbags for all the added costs and headaches they impose on all of us for securing such events. Lawful peaceful protest is one thing, but since nowadays there is always the imminent threat of violence, vandalism, assaults, chaos, and even potential assassinations, etc. it is difficult to go light on the security footprint for such summit meetings anywhere.
WE’ve NEVER seen anything like this Down here before...Just disgraceful.
