Thompson's entry in the race has been a foregone conclusion for weeks, but his refusal to definitively declare his candidacy had begun to irritate some backers who were concerned he had lost precious momentum. Nonetheless, in most national polls he is in second place among Republican hopefuls, trailing Rudy Giuliani and leading Mitt Romney. It mostly irritated Romney backers who watched Fred blow by Mitt without officially entering the race.

And Senator Warner is probably leaving. Both Warner and Fred Thompson have something in common--they both voted against the impeachment of President Clinton.
From Wikipedia on Warner:
...Warner was among ten GOP Senators who voted against the charge of perjury during Clinton's impeachment (the others were Dick Shelby of Alabama, Ted Stevens of Alaska, Susan Collins of Maine, Olympia Snowe of Maine, John Chafee of Rhode Island, Arlen Specter of Pennsylvania, Jim Jeffords of Vermont, Slade Gorton of Washington and Fred Thompson of Tennessee). Warner and others who voted against the article angered many Republicans by their position. However, unlike Snowe, Collins, Specter, Jeffords and Chafee, the rest of the Republicans voted "guilty" on the second article.

Speaking as an outsider, I see Fred as a great communicator, and Newt as a great ideas man. I think the President should be a great communicator, like Reagan.

I’m supportive of Fred’s entry into the race, and particularly looking forward to him speaking in more than platitudes. I like his general philosophy, but I can only support him so far and remain intellectually honest without some policy specifics. Philosophy is nice, but it is good ideas that rally a nation and win elections.
