Des Moines, Iowa (AP) --
Republican Fred Thompson, whose entry into the presidential race has been long anticipated, will officially launch his candidacy Sept. 6 in a webcast on his campaign site, followed by a five-day tour of early primary states, The Associated Press has learned.
The preliminary campaign of the former Tennessee senator and "Law & Order" actor is to disclose details about how he will formally enter the race in a Thursday afternoon conference call with supporters.
House parties will be held nationwide on Sept. 6. A tour of Iowa, New Hampshire and South Carolina will quickly follow the Internet announcement on , with later stops in Florida, and a homecoming event in Lawrenceburg, Tenn., on Sept. 15.
On Wednesday, Thompson will appear on NBC's "Tonight Show with Jay Leno" but he won't participate with his Republican rivals in a debate that same night in New Hampshire.

Amen, Brother.
Inevitable defeat against whom? Ron Paul? Come on. Thompson coming in completely changes the dynamics of the race he immediately turns this into a two man race and eliminates any hope Romney has. From here on out it will be Rudy vs Fred so choose your side.
There are way to many debates with just to many candidates involved. He should skip all of them until the scrubs like Duncan Hunter drop out.
Come on Fred, #$%# or get off the pot.
I just don’t think there are enough Chi-Coms to donate money to Hillary to save her from the wrath of Fred!
Anyone really sure?
What mistake? Six months from now these over hyped way too early “debates” will not even be remembered. This early in the game these things are no more than beauty contests for the media’s selected candidates.
They have yet to invent an instrument that can measure my indifference to this whole Fred thing.
The Thompson folks have been telegraphing that date since last winter. Frankly, I wasn’t ready for the campaign season to start as early as it has. I’ve been amused by the way Fred has handled this.
New Hampshire remembers. In particular the Manchester Union Leader will remind them.
Where are all the idiots that said last month was already too late?
As if any politically astute campaign would make their splash the last week of summer, before a long weekend, when not a soul other than truthers are paying any attention to the race.
Jeez. 30+ posts and mostly a buncha whining crybabies.
Some good talk from Fred. Reminds me of Bush in a way. Tell you anything you want to hear just to get elected. I will never vote for a candidate who I agree 100% of the time because no candidate is perfect.
“I hope Fred Thompson understands this one thing... nobody likes a tease.”
Yeah, I think he’s dragged it out about a month too long. But people are fickle and will soon forget.
The strategy of avoiding the early, multi-candidate popularity contests, I think they called them “debtates” was excellent, IMO.
State your vision, your beliefs on issues and quit trying to turn or political system into a red carpet affair Frankly, I'm about as conservitive as you can get, but this guy is really starting to turn me off....and I did have high hopes for him too. I would love a Hunter/Mc Clintock/Tancredo ticket or any other variation
July 2007 - LOS ANGELES - If Fred Thompson makes it official and throws his hat in the ring for President, NBC will pull future reruns of "Law & Order" featuring the actor after Sept. 1, executive producer Dick Wolf said yesterday.Wolf, reading from an official NBC statement yesterday, said the rule applies when a person legally qualifies as a candidate.
"If Fred Thompson formally declares his intention to run for President, NBC will not schedule any further repeats of 'Law & Order' featuring Mr. Thompson beyond those already scheduled, which conclude on Saturday, Sept. 1," Wolf said. Wolf assured that NBC would take all "appropriate steps consistent with FCC regulations." Thompson fans would, however, be able to see him in reruns airing on TNT.
I remember reading about this, I just spent 1/2 looking for the article but couldn't. Does anyone have a link. It was a story about a month ago.
“So he chickens out of the New Hampshire”
Shows that he’s still an actor and nothing more. Why can’t he get with the program an step up to the plate...zzzzzzzzzz Is the golf cart not working? How long can you wait with baited breathe before you turn blue?
Have any of these early, absurd game show looking debates served any purpose, other than for the candidates to primp and strut?
