Former Tennessee Senator Fred Dalton Thompson may be announcing his presidential candidacy formally at 4:30 pm EDT today. A reliable source close to Thompson's advisors told HUMAN EVENTS that today would be the actual announcement, not the announcement-of-the-announcement rumored earlier.
Thompson's move may have been accelerated by the August 29 editorial in the Manchester, NH Union Leader that said Thompson's failure to participate in the scheduled September 5 debate would be a snub to New Hampshirites.
Whatever motivated Thompson, the September 5 debate - with him in it - would be much more important than it would otherwise have been.
“Republicans and Democrats came together today and acted in the best interest of Michigan. This is a tremendous opportunity for our state and for Republicans and Democrats to educate the next president of the United States about what is unique and special about Michigan. Let’s keep the focus where is should be: on a bipartisan discussion about what’s best for the people of Michigan. I will say this again: January 15 was not our preferred choice, but Republicans have agreed to this date in order to establish a primary along with the Democrats and ensure that Michigan receives attention and prominence it deserves on the national political stage.”
The Governor of Michigan has already said “It” would sign this.
Good news for Fred Thompson because he leads in the polls that have him on it for the MI Republican primary.
The RATS wont be able to crossover this time because they vote the same day. Bad news for the RINO’s.
WHAT???
No way..are you serious?
He’s just wrinkled from being in the water so long. :-)
Sincerely,
A committed Fred supporter who has a check waiting to go in the mail...
Let’s not get picky .. the earliest primary is late January 2008, 5 months away, and the general election is early November 2008, 14 months plus a few days. After super-duper Tuesday the parties’ nominating will likely be over except for the formalities known as nominating conventions.
The only people paying attention now are us news/political junkies. There is plenty of time for someone like Fred Thompson with plenty of name ID to mount a successful campaign for the nomination. Whether he does or not is another story. Some of the candidates have been in for months and months and can’t rise above single digits. Thompson is among the top contenders with just speculation about his run.
Thats better yet. Mutt was Gov. ( kinda like owner) of the RATS in that state. Tear em up Willard!
Nice dogs.
They haven't heard the news yet that the 2 1/2 delegates (yes, hyperbole) left in New England have been eclipsed by the massive migration of the middle class out of the Socialist States there and into other areas of the country.
Undoubtedly, they still remember when the South was a solid Democrat voting block and just do not understand how the dems lost the Florida vote in 04 to the republican candidate, so apparently the voters there must have been too stupid to know how to vote.
The times have passed them by and the new primary schedule is simply cold reality slapping them in the face.
hhhmmm...
Sounds to me like you had already decided not to vote for him.
That is exactly what is going to happen. Nobody saw an old Reagan movie on TV from his announcement in November, 1979 thru the election in 1980.
“Lets not get picky .. the earliest primary is late January 2008, 5 months away,”
Wyoming is moving to Jan 5 - 4 months and 6 days from now.
“... and the general election is early November 2008, 14 months plus a few days.” The difference between 4 1/2 months and 14 months is not ‘picky’.
” After super-duper Tuesday the parties nominating will likely be over except for the formalities known as nominating conventions.” - my point exactly. The ‘campaign season’ for the presidential primary is this summer to next February.
“The only people paying attention now are us news/political junkies.” - And as such, we know that political races take a lot more preparation, time and planning than can be done in just 2-3 months. Just because most people make their voting decision in the last 2-3 weeks of a campaign, dont jump to the ludicrous conclusion that most of the campaign effort can be put off until then.
As Napoleon noted, most battles are won before the first shot is fired (ie its the planning).
In political campaigns, most are won before the first vote is cast.
Take a breath and climb down.
a candidate decides for himself if and when he shall run and his deciding for himself is certainly the best thing that any person can do, unless you believe that he should be listening to the masses and the mass media to tell him when to jump.
The man is thinking for himself, not for you, and that is a character virtue, not a flaw.
Yeah, I saw that phony letter. Check all the spelling mistakes on it out.
May I ask why it is so difficult to simply as...”on XXX date I will make an announcement as to a potential run for President.” Enough of the “cat and mouse” games. I’d much rather hear an announcement from the horse’s mouth than some horse’s ass.
