Pennsylvania Gov. Edward Rendell said in an interview yesterday that he plans to keep the $40,000 he has received...

Why am I not surprised that Fast Eddie is keeping the money.... Just talking about Rendell makes me feel like I need a shower.

Wasn't there a Maria Hsu that was tied up somehow in algore's buddhist monk fandango?

I beleive that was Maria Hsia.

I think you’re right, but aren’t they both pronounced like “shaw”?

Not sure on the pronunciations, but the linguists I work with assure me that they are different names, and not just different westernizations of the same name.

We are going to have some problems discerning who’s who in this.

1. Pronunciation of the names involved.
2. IIRC, the Chinese place the family name first, not last as we in the West do.
3. All the obvious (intentional??) misspellings of contributor names as well as the names of businesses on the FEC filings.

If someone gives you money for your campaign, it is meant for your campaign.
Wouldn’t the legal thing be to give it back to the person who gave it to you. They could then give it to a charity of their choosing if they wish.
Is the law such that if you give it to them, then it is theirs to do as they wish, even if you intended it to go to the campaign?
Hope this makes sense, I know what I am talking about!

In other words, “We looked at every possible argument for keeping the money, but could not come up with one that would work.”

That is exactly what I was thinking. They don't care if the money is dirty, just if keeping it would hurt their image. Anyway, they'll probably give it back as collateral on a guaranteed interest-free loan.

Check with Dennis Kucinich on what you can do with unspent campaign money.

Each of us who has a democrat rep and/or senator can check to see if they received Hsu donations. If they have, call and write their offices to request specific information on which charity the money was given to, or how and when, to whom, and in what amount the money was returned to the donor. As a constituent, you are entitled to an answer, and that answer—or lack thereof—is of interest to your local media.

Even if a direct Hsu donation is not readily apparent, we can request info from the rep/senator’s office on what specific steps they’re taking to ensure that distributions they’ve received from DNC or DSCC or PACs were not part of any tainted monies.

Even if the named charity is a legit and worthy non-partisan entity, there can still be funny business. If they
never get the check or don’t cash it, the campaign is not out the money at all. Same deal if the funny money donor never cashes the check for returned funds. It still sits in the pol’s account and presumably qualifies for matching funds from taxpayers.

Probably to the Boys & Girls Club of New York City (and, voila!, Al Franken gets a donation for his Senate run)
