U.S. troops release Iranians detained in Iraq Military hands 7 over to Iraqi authorities hours after their apprehension
BAGHDAD, Iraq - U.S. troops released seven Iranians early Wednesday, hours after detaining them at a central Baghdad hotel, an Iranian embassy official said.
The Iranian diplomat, who refused to give his name, told The Associated Press that one of those released contacted the embassy Wednesday morning to say that they have been handed over to Iraqi authorities.
American troops raided Baghdads Sheraton Ishtar hotel and took away a group of about 10 people late Tuesday. The diplomat said the seven Iranians included an embassy staffer and six members of a delegation from Irans Electricity Ministry.

Release Hell!
They should have invited them to a compulsory old fashioned, all-American NECKtie party!
Hey, it’s a swingin’ event!
WTF? What was the point of arresting them then? Catch and release is a Circus.
A rusty knife to their throats would have been a better idea.
But we aren’t allowed to send a return message like that are we.
It also sent a big message..
The message will only have effect when Ahmadinejad is too scared to visit Iraq next time. The message should be (and I guess this is what you are referring to)”we can grab your officials and agents anytime”. But I think keeping them arrested would have given the message a bit more bite.
Not every Iranian is Quds Force.
To all those whining about “catch and release”, maybe our friends in the Iraqi military and police WE’VE been training have better “interrogation” techniques that can be employed without the DBM and democratic presidential candidates being outraged.
Why didn’t we do a trade for the four Americans held hostage in Iran?
"In other news, two US Army soldiers are being prosecuted by the Justice Dept. for allegedly firing their weapons into the posterior of an Iranian infiltrator. The soldiers didn't immediately report the incident and failed to fill out the proper paperwork. The Iranians was reported to be smuggling in 75 kilos of heroin from Iran, but has been given immunity for his testimony against the soldiers. U.S. Attorney Johnny Sutton is reported to be leading the prosecution."
Hmmmm.
So? Why are we supposed to respect their "diplomatic" status? Since creation of the Islamic regime they have trampled on our and others rights and conventions with feet. They didn't respect our diplomats 1979, they attacked Western embassies 2006, they kidnap Western soldiers, they attack our allies, they kill our soldiers.
Excuse me, but I fail to see the relevancy of their "diplomatic" rights.
You are quoting that. Do you have a link?
Bingo!
LLS
And wages proxy war on our troops while Bush wrings his hands and sends strongly worded letters!
I hope we turned them over to sunni warlords?
One thought would be that a better trade might be for Mookie.
I’m not so sure I’d call them released.
If you believe that, you also believe everything the man behind the curtain says. Sheesh.
I agree, catch and release is a joke - here or there
