The United States has 90 guns for every 100 citizens, making it the most heavily armed society in the world, a report released on Tuesday said.
U.S. citizens own 270 million of the world's 875 million known firearms, according to the Small Arms Survey 2007 by the Geneva-based Graduate Institute of International Studies.
About 4.5 million of the 8 million new guns manufactured worldwide each year are purchased in the United States, it said.
"There is roughly one firearm for every seven people worldwide. Without the United States, though, this drops to about one firearm per 10 people," it said.
India had the world's second-largest civilian gun arsenal, with an estimated 46 million firearms outside law enforcement and the military, though this represented just four guns per 100 people there. China, ranked third with 40 million privately held guns, had 3 firearms per 100 people.
Germany, France, Pakistan, Mexico, Brazil and Russia were next in the ranking of country's overall civilian gun arsenals.
On a per-capita basis, Yemen had the second most heavily armed citizenry behind the United States, with 61 guns per 100 people, followed by Finland with 56, Switzerland with 46, Iraq with 39 and Serbia with 38.

As an NRA member for many years, I still find it aggravating to receive the number of solicitations I receive from “branches of the NRA”. They seem to look more and more like the right-wing answer to AARP. On the other hand, if they would just cause a few more sheeple to grow a pair and support the Constitution because we need to be armed to protect us from our government not because we like to hunt I would be lots happier.
If all gun owners belonged to SOME gun rights organization gun control wouldn’t even be an issue and politicians wouldn’t have to grow a pair
Right. They tell us that 80 million Americans own a gun, but NRA only has between 4 and 5 million members and the other gun orgs have perhaps one or two million among them. That means that about 93% of all gun owners are riding in the wagon and the other 7% are totin the load. That's a pretty sad set of stats if you ask me.
Thanks! He is a sharp boy, he can even set-up my reloading press. Earlier this year I got him a .410 shotgun (well technically it’s mine until he’s 18), and he is learning to use that too, much to the chagrin of my Mother, who also hated it when my Dad taught us 4 kids to shoot when we were about the same age.
I took my family out to the range when my boys were young. we all had .22's, even Mrs. Designer.
Now, however, Designer's DIL is a dummycrat, so my grandsons have not been to the range, and they are 14 and 11.
How'd you let that happen? Time for a Grandpa / Grandson weekend?
