I've been wondering if I should get my CDL. I'm 21, and not fully blind or deaf, and I live in CT. I also have no driving record, either positive or negative, 'cuz I don't own a car. I got the idea when I was going home Friday night, as I saw a lot of trucks on the road.
Can anybody help a young guy out?
Hey wasted, it’s me your buddy from the Stamford freep in the middle of winter!
My advice is a Commercial license will give you a lot of opportunities. I know a lot of guys that run their own routes delivering Doritos, bread etc to grocery stores. A CDL is good for bus driving (school or city). However, I still think if you are looking at a career go into a trade that will always be needed. Ready, grave stone engraver. Yes, I know that is weird but so few are learning the craft of engraving rock and God knows you will be in demand. Talk to me after you have stopped laughing! Love ya mojo
Yeah, that somebody was me. When I said you may not be able to pass the physical it was in your present condition without a hearing aid. (I should have been more specific.)
These requirements may be different from state to state I can only say what the requirements of the state of Connecticut were at the time I acquired my license and renewals were. (But that was some time ago)
Get your CDL then consider applying for an apprenticeship to train to become a journeyman lineman. From what I’ve read there’s a shortage.
I would go into plumbing. After a few years you’ll drive your own truck, too, and after 10 you can fly your own plane.
Then do not get a CDL.
With all the illegals running around willing to work in plumbing, at 7 bucks and hour, he should have a great future.
My record is clean.
We all have days like that. Thanks for helping me remember that I’m not alone. :)
wallcrawlr maintains a ping list for deaf/hard of hearing.
I appreciate that, but I’m not deaf or hard of hearing yet. With luck, I’ll be there in my 50s.
If I had really meant to send it by FR mail, I wouldn't have typed........
Now, I'll just send this to JC's FR mail box........
You don't have to say it. I know......
Keep your day job.
I’ve actually posted things that I meant to be FReepmail. I had them pulled immediately.
So now I am alone after all.....:((
Well go down to the dmv and get a cdl book and start reading. Take your test, for your learners permit and make some calls. And stay out of the pickle parks.
If you are physically capable, and expect to continue to be: If you are footloose, see if you can get on with someone riding shotgun.
There isn’t much money in it, but you’ll get a feel for the road and the life- plenty of information to get you past the romance, without paying for the education first. I rode shotgun on car haulers in the winter time to help getting cars on and off and help chaining her up.
If you feel like you’re condition will worsen sooner, I would hope you would try something where your malady won’t interfere with you and shorten your career.
Any way you look at it, learn a trade of some kind. Trades won’t make you rich, but you will never lack for work if you are good at something. After that, shoot for the moon- go to college and do something with yourself. If you miss, you can always fall back on that trade.
Best regards,
-Bruce
Thanks for the advice, Bruce.
with luck youll be deaf or hard of hearing?
odd but ok
:)
No, I meant that with luck, it will take time to degrade severely.
NP, brother. I remember what it was like being where you are. It’s damn hard to have to make such decisions when you are too young to know the difference... While you are calculating it all out, remember to figure on the fixin’s for a mortgage, a wife, and 2.5 curtain-climbers because they are sure to come
;)
Good luck.
