Seems that a traveling queer in a strange city who wants to get together for a tryst will come up to a stranger he likes and says,”Excuse me,do you know Dorothy?”,the Dorothy name chosen because of the movie,The Wizard of Oz,the ultimate gay friendly movie.
If the unwitting stranger says,”no”or “Dorothy who?”then the gay walks on.If the guy says,”’Oh,yes,I know Dorothy quite well”then its on for the night.
