This academic year, because of a new state law, Sebastian and all other California children in their first year of school must get a dental checkup by May 31. Children will receive notices from their schools about the new requirement, which took effect Jan. 1. Any checkups in the 12 months before the child enters school also fulfill the requirement.
"It's a great idea," said Sebastian's mother, Lourdes Contreras of Santa Clara, who said she, 4-year-old Sebastian and his 12-year-old sister have no health insurance despite her working three jobs. "There are a lot of people who don't take their children to the dentist until they really have a problem. I'm really strict about brushing and flossing."
But the law has few teeth, so to speak.
Children will not be barred from school if they do not get the checkup. Parents who can't afford the exam, lack insurance coverage or simply do not want their child's dental health evaluated can sign a waiver to opt out of the requirement. And because the law does not require treatment of problems identified during screenings, some critics believe it will do little to get poor or uninsured children the dental care they need.

I deal with dental insurance thru medicaid. A lot of places
require dental exams for school.

“... let’s acknowledge a disturbing possibility: A large number of graduates of our mandatory government youth propaganda camps can no longer discern any difference between saying something is wise and good, and saying government must punish those who fail to do it.” - Vin Suprynowicz
Okay so you say you want freedom, but when it comes to your own kid’s dental exams.....you turn to Big Momma Government?
This from the same people who claim a woman has the right to control her own body, and want to put all medical care in the hands of politicians. You’d think there heads would explode from all the internal dissonance...
I would guess that this bill was introduced by legislators who received huge contributions from dentists. The same thing happened here in North Carolina when House Speaker Jim Black, an optometrist, accepted large contributions from optometrists. Then a law was passed requiring all children to have eye exams by an optometrist before being admitted to school. He is now in prison.
At what age do they require pap smears?
” “It’s a great idea,” said Sebastian’s mother, Lourdes Contreras”
Of course it is a greatr idea if SOMEONE else pays for it.
What if the kid needs lots of dental work, who pays then?

In NC they wre going to require eye exams.
Slight problem though. Speaker of the House, Jim Black, was an optometrist.
Just a teenie-weenie little conflict of interest, no?
Trouble is Mr. Black got caught taking bribes and only recently reported to Federal prison for same.
I think they repealed the eye exam requirement.
Someone in California has a brother in law who’s a dentist - somebody’s ox is likely being feathered (Or whatever).
Bet he didn't see that coming.
Guaranteed income, again. Courtesy of Big Brother.
Ever since I heard about collusion between CA and mechanics’ garages to pass the emissions BS requirements, I have lost all faith any of these are done with the “good intentions” in mind, 1st and foremost.
“somebodys ox is likely being feathered (Or whatever).”
Either that, or their nest/bed is being gored?
funny.
Parents would have to apply for visitation rights!!
It's called, "cognitive dissonance"......and it's a mental disorder...... http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cognitive_dissonance
truly! In Illinois, the state has it set up that insurance will not count the school exam as the regular one so the kids actually get extra! Some of the waste astounds me. Medicaid members get far better benefits than I do and I pay for mine! Then they get indignant when we won’t cover invisalign or implants or whitening! The entitlement attitudes just are outrageous.
So how are all the illegals going to pay for their checkups. Surely, they won’t deny them their education just because they didn’t get their teeth checked.
Schools should be in the business of teaching, not teeth.
