Anti-Defamation League Recognizes Armenian Genocide, But It’s Not Enough
North Star Writers Group ^ | August 27, 2007 | Stephen Silver

The Anti-Defamation League did its part to right a historical wrong this week. But was it too little, too late?

The ADL, probably the most influential group representing the Jewish community in the United States, announced in mid-August that its position is now to acknowledge the Armenian genocide. This comes as a reversal of the organization’s previous position, which was to take no position, and to argue that the question is best left to historians, not to Congress. It's yet another case of events from many decades ago having a profound effect on the debates of today.

No it’s not enough. He should apologize to that kid he fired last week for calling it what it was—genocide.

The ADL, probably the most influential group representing the Jewish community in the United States today...

There was no vote in the American Jewish community to elect the ADL or Abe Foxman as its spokesperson. The problem is that the ADL under Foxman has gone off the deep end too many times, yet the MSM persists in placing them at the center of the Jewish universe in the US.

The fact is that the ADL has outlived the its usefulness as an organization whose original purpose was as its name implies: to counteract antisemitism in the US and around the world.

Contrary to the opinion of the writer of the posted article, Foxman is no centrist who sometimes comes down on the left side of an issue and sometimes the right. He is clearly on the left side of the political spectrum almost all the time. In pursuit of his agenda, he all too frequently causes or contributes to needless and counterproductive friction between the Jewish and conservative Christian communities.

IMO, the ADL would gain credence if they start investigating Hillary Clinton and other Liberals who are truly antisemitic.

That is precisely the reason they do it.

During the Cold War agitation over the Armenian genocide was often for the purpose of discrediting anti-Communist Turkey, and indeed most Armenian groups were pro-Communist. In the post-CW era the Armenian-American community is still a hotbed of classic liberal Democrat ethnic politics. If there are any Turkish-American groups out there I don't know about them. I doubt there are that many Turkish-Americans.

The ADL has always been liberal and was often engaged in very public opposition to anti-Communist groups (back when anti-Communism unfortunately often went hand-in-glove with anti-Semitism). But it's definitely jumped clear off the cliff with Foxman, whose loud forays into domestic issues with no Jewish connection whatsoever make the former leaders of the ADL seem like absolute moderates in comparison (though of course, "liberalism" back then didn't mean all the things it does today).

The writer is wrong on one issue. Foxman was wrong about The Passion. Yes, Mel Gibson is an anti-Semite. But Foxman predicted that there would be literal anti-Jewish violence in the country if it was shown. It was and there wasn't, and so far as I know he has yet to apologize for this idiocy. Gibson's own ravings have provided him cover.

The true and legitimate rulers of the `Am Yisra'el are the Torah Sages. The entire secular ABC-communal organizational structure of the American Jewish community is a gigantic imposture.

I agree with you that the writer (seemingly trying to make Foxman look better than he really is) was wrong about The Passion and so was Foxman with his description of the film and dire prediction that was way off base. That's a perfect example of what I mean about Foxman going off the deep end.

However, not all secular Jewish organizations in the US should be lumped into the same category as Foxman's ADL.

Without exception (except for explicitly conservative Jewish organizations) all the secular Jewish organizations in the US are liberal. They make up the so-called "official" Jewish communal structure in the US.

My point was simply that only the Gedolim are the authentic leaders of Israel.
